- I hate people who ask me if the elevator is going up or down when there is a display that clearly shows if its going up or down on the side of the elevator door.

- I hate people who are relatively healthy get on at the 2nd floor to go down as if their world would turn upside down if they had to step into the stairwell. Same for people who are willing to wait more than 5 mins and pack the elevator just to get off on the 2nd floor causing others who live on the higher floors to wait for the next one.

- It amuses me when people press the elevator button multiple times even though it's already lit as if the elevator is going to come any faster. I hate those who bang on the doors for the same reason because it's taking too long.

- I hate people who let their dogs piss in the elevator and doesn't clean it up. Yea it happens like everyday at my building.

Beaming ray of sunshine, you are

Crop dust immediately upon entering. That increases the chances that other people will stay out.

Well technically, crop dusting is done while moving. Of course you would be crop dusting while entering the elevator but there isn't much movement involved

heh-heh...my wife bought this shirt for me:

I find it's better to crop dust the waiting area, that way when the doors open you can burst into the elevator yelling at everyone to NOT go out there as it's a toxic gas cloud.

I bet you never thought you'd ever use that chain email for something useful, did ya?

You thought that was useful. I believe it was offensive and derogatory towards those of us who can't help being super excited about new socks (#17).

Also,

I have new socks on! Woohoo!!!

Who suckered you into riding elevators? I think you should skip work for 5-8 months until other people learn to ride them correctly.

so, let's say you're the first to get into the elevator. do you:

1) ask others what floor and press it for them?

2) make small talk on the way up/down?

3) smile politely and nod?

4) hold the Door Open button until everyone is in?

i only do the first. i hate small talk and direct eye contacts on elevators. plus, i hit the Door Close button repeatedly so others can't make it in. when WILL they invent button technology that understands urgency?

1) No, people can press their own buttons unless their hands are full or I know them (and where they are going). People have tried to do me the favor and heard me wrong, resulting in unnecessary stops.

2) Depends on the person and context. I don't try to initiate conversations, but I do chat with some people in the elevators at work who I see frequently and I try not to be rude to people in my apartment building.

3) More likely to say good morning/afternoon/evening unless they nod at me first, in which case I would probably do the same.

4) This one varies a lot. If I'm in a good mood and not in a rush I'll hold the door for everyone. At work, if someone makes eye contact or asks to hold the door, I will, but I will push the "door close" button non stop otherwise so I don't get delayed. At home, I usually hold the door and if I see someone getting the mail, I'll ask if they'd like me to wait, but specifically because there are only 2 VERY slow elevators and I'm trying to condition the people in my building to be considerate.

I also lived in an apartment building when I was growing up and when I lived there I almost always held the door, pushed buttons (because I knew everyone and where they lived), and talked to people because they were basically neighbors who knew my family for years. I'm far less concerned about being this friendly towards people who I don't know as well where I live now, but I do try to be polite.
