so, let's say you're the first to get into the elevator. do you:
1) ask others what floor and press it for them?
2) make small talk on the way up/down?
3) smile politely and nod?
4) hold the Door Open button until everyone is in?
i only do the first. i hate small talk and direct eye contacts on elevators. plus, i hit the Door Close button repeatedly so others can't make it in. when WILL they invent button technology that understands urgency?
1) No, people can press their own buttons unless their hands are full or I know them (and where they are going). People have tried to do me the favor and heard me wrong, resulting in unnecessary stops.
2) Depends on the person and context. I don't try to initiate conversations, but I do chat with some people in the elevators at work who I see frequently and I try not to be rude to people in my apartment building.
3) More likely to say good morning/afternoon/evening unless they nod at me first, in which case I would probably do the same.
4) This one varies a lot. If I'm in a good mood and not in a rush I'll hold the door for everyone. At work, if someone makes eye contact or asks to hold the door, I will, but I will push the "door close" button non stop otherwise so I don't get delayed. At home, I usually hold the door and if I see someone getting the mail, I'll ask if they'd like me to wait, but specifically because there are only 2 VERY slow elevators and I'm trying to condition the people in my building to be considerate.
I also lived in an apartment building when I was growing up and when I lived there I almost always held the door, pushed buttons (because I knew everyone and where they lived), and talked to people because they were basically neighbors who knew my family for years. I'm far less concerned about being this friendly towards people who I don't know as well where I live now, but I do try to be polite.
