Electrical dilema

I'm trying to set up a motion sensor night light for the side door hall-way. There is no ground wiring for wall installed motion sensor illumination. My other option is to stick a motion sensor night light (wall plug in)

Again I've run into a problem. This is the wall switch and socket:

The problem is the wall plug in motion sensor night light has the fat ended neutral and normal form factor prongs.. this leaves the wall mount to face up towards the switch. The switch is need for a light at the bottom of the stairs so I can't just install an outlet.

What's my other options? File down the prongs on the plug in night light?

Maybe try to find a replacement plug/switch where the plug is reversed to the one you have?

;) Using this should give clearance for the switch.

wire in a separate outlet next to the switch...or just mickey mouse it and use a short extension cord.

wire in a separate outlet next to the switch...

That would be a good idea if I didn't have to find the stud then cut the plaster/drywall...

I just checked my parents house and they have the type of switch + outlet combo I need so they must make them.. I'm going to take another look at the hardware store and see what I come up with..

Thanks for far fellas :)

File the fatty down and reverse the hot and neutral wires for the outlet but not the switch.

This took awhile to find on Amazon.

Apparently the outlet can rotate 360 degrees, so you can have it at whatever angle.

To sum it up. I didn't find one with an inverted plug, but I want that one that's posted. Thanks for the link. What I did find out is the LED night lights do not have the wide neutral prong with the normal sized prong and would work to suit my needs. What I also found was that LED night lights that say they are "soft light" are not the soft light found with bulbed night lights. That how-ever does not suit me well.

The last thing I found out tonight is that my underwear has been on backwards all day long, lol

goodnight, see ya in a week, going to California tomorrow morning, hah :)

If you don't want to have to order something special online, use one of these:

I've always wanted to do that, just for fun, but you actually have a situation where it could work.

I would not shave the blade as there is a reason it's like that. Though, it's minor and it wont be THAT bad once it's installed. The reason it's that way is because the outer part of the socket is neutral, and that's the more likely place your finger may touch while you are screwing in a bulb. If you reverse it, that part will become hot, and it increases the chance of getting a shock if your finger accidentally goes in the socket or touches the metal part of the bulb while screwing one in.

That's why if you "shave" it (someone photoshop a beard on his outlet) you also should reverse the hot and neutral for the outlet but not the switch.
