Do the math. For me with the 500watt power supply which has <70% efficency + 19inch CRT + 19LCD + Speakers, it comes to about 1kilowatt. If you had it running full time for a month (24X30=720) that's 720hrs x 1kW = 720kWhrs and at say 9 cents each, you get $64.80. Except my computer isn't on full time so nm. If it was though, you can see how your total bill could easily be that high.

your computer is not running at full power all the time. Even at load, I would be surprised if your 500 Watt max output power supply is drawing more than 200 Watts from the wall. Thats the number that matters.

Averaged, the total draw is probably around 110 Watts including all of the idle time.

Also $64.80 is before all of the dumb fees. That usage bill in your example would probably be closer to 120$ unfortunately :/

I know, I was making it simple. But actually at full idle it draws around 350watts (Yes, I have actually checked), but it's essentially never there. If it'll be at a full idle I'll just turn it off, otherwise I'm always downloading crap or rendering something.

Is your fridge empty?

Many people don't realize that leaving a fridge empty is very expensive. Get some bottles of water to fill it up at the very least.

What the heck... $50 for electric bill is really low. My 3 person apartment was running $70-$100 electric bill, but ofcourse it depends on the seasons.

electric stove, oven, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, water heater, AC. All of those use up massive amounts of electricity.

Usually in the summer, my meter reading guy gets lazy and doesn't read my meter. The power company sends me an estimated bill, usually double of my normal usage ($40-50 total). Monthly use is 250-350 kwh a month, really depending on how much I leave the AC on.

wow that's cheap. rooming w/ 2 other people, our Electric bill was about $150 avg. Now with 4, we have around $220ish/month.

Wow, I can't remember when it was I last saw a bill that low. mine averages over $225 and we have gas heat. 😕

Your wife is growing.

I wish my electricity bill was $50 a month. :Q
$100 is normal here, 2-story house and 2nd story a/c never runs. I keep the thermostat at 77-78, and I turn it up to 82 when I leave the house.

My 650 sq ft apt a few years ago cost me $25/mo since I didn't have AC.

Is it the A/C that is costing you guys a fortune? Right now I live in a 900 sq ft place and for an extra $50 they cover water, gas, electric, and the rent on a fridge.

I would kill for a $50/mo electric bill...

I've been ~ $125 lately in a 2 bedroom townhouse.
