I only had a very quick look at ESO when my wife d/led the last beta...so I really only had a chance to look at it for 2 mins or so...mind you: LOOK at it, I didn't play.

The point is that they want $15ish per month and I think that THIS will be the major criteria for the game. (Make no mistake, we both also played WoW religiously before it got bad..but then we knew WHY we spend this amount every month).

For example, right now we both play The Secret World which cost a one-time fee for me $15 from a CD store online and the key for my wife even less, $12....a ONE TIME payment for an otherwise excellent MMORPG with finally some new ideas.

The question is...can ESO online justify such an amount PER MONTH..eg. will it be so grand and SOOOO fantastic that it would be at least "as good" as WoW so that people will happily pay...in a game genre which otherwise had been pretty much done to death already...this is MY question. Can ESO really deliver such an experience which would justify spending the amount for a game like TSW...each and every month?

Now..this is not only my own view (not that I personally see $15 as an issue) but has already been pointed out in many other reviews/previews. There is a reason why SWTOR and many other MMORPGs went F2P....simply because people today are NOT willing to spend $15 so easily as back in the times where WoW was the newest and coolest thing.

Furthermore, I personally expect certain things from an MMORPG...for instance the social component etc. for an MMORPg is very important to me. (Duh, because otherwise I wouldn't play a MMORPg but a single-player game!), also things like PvP and all THOSE things where I really see the benefit of being in an MMORPG. Whether ESO can satisfy that I don't know. All I know is that a MMORPG which in essence is a single-player game and which WOULD lack in the fundamental things which make a MMORPG good is pointless. (Simply "many people able to play at the same time" doesn't make a MMORPG...it would then only be a software piracy protection for a game in disguise).

Obviously, since I never played ESO I can't say anything about how it will be in regards to its MMORPG aspect...but as I told my wife: "I don't need a MMORPG or a monthly subscription for a game where I may end up farming mushrooms for hours and hours" 🙂

Whatever other qualities it may have, it at least has all the basic mechanics you would expect of a professionally-produced major MMORPG title.

Depends on the player rather than the game I would say.

Not really. It's a very common tactic in regular ES games because they are not MMOs. Enemies are different in SP games than in MMOs, not to mention MMOs have much different fighting mechanics.

I have a review for TESO if anyone is interested. If not, disregard! lol

I'm not sure exactly how much I'm allowed to say about the BETA thus far, but I'll keep it short to avoid brushing legal issues; I think it is really fun.

EDIT:

Okay, maybe it should be deleted just in case. Though other BETA players are allowed to comment about the game on Facebook, I'm going to be careful. lol

I'm a fan of Elder Scroll games and even got had a beta invite key, this game needs to go free, subscription based it will fail IMHO,offers nothing new even over free MMORPGs.

From the gameplay videos I've seen... it seems the group combat system in ESO is going to be a total clusterfluff like GW2. In GW2 PvE you just spam all your skills and don't pay any attention to your teammates unless one of them needs a rez.

I see that ESO uses a Trinity system but that it's very loose, anyone is free to specialize in the skills they want. Tanks can be Healers, Healer can be DPS...etc. This sounds pretty similar to GW2's system where every profession can fulfill every role, in that game it creates frustration in PUG's because you're left to guess what type of party you've been matched up with. Are they full dps (great), or are they nut-jobs running full healing gear in PvE (your worst nightmare)...

In ESO, can you tell what type of role a PUG is playing or is it a total mystery?

From what I can tell mystery other than many the visual equipment indicators ie, sword staff heavy light armor etc.

There is no player inspection tool in the game

Bump... I have a friend key for this weekend's beta. If anyone is interested PM me. First PM gets it.

I'll be checking this out this weekend for the closed beta with my brother and a friend from work. It seems way better from what I'm hearing from hardcore ES fans and the way the skill system is built really appeals to me.

Every class can be any role, HOWEVER you have to spec for that, so you cannot rock up and be tank/healer/DPS at the same time, if you are tanking you are going to be set up with sword and board (the only line with a taunt skill).
Early on you have to decide what role you want to fulfill and focus on it, by end game I believe you have enough skill points that you can likely be able to fulfill two different roles and can choose which to do depending on what your group needs (you can't be doing both roles at once).

Think of it more like Rift or FFXIV more than GW2 - it is not a case of 'you are a bit of everything' but a case of you CAN be anything but choose what to be prior to the fighting.

Certainly fighting is different from a typical MMO, it won't be a case of the tank standing up front with all aggro and everyone else just pinging away and healing - there won't be aggro lockdowns, there will be mini battles taking place with your party and other foes, as a tank you will be reliably keeping the toughest opponent on you and with the right skill set can help keep the others from your allies (such as AOE snare, or an ability that pulls a mob to you) but I don't believe you will be full on 'aggroing' everything.
That is probably the main difference in combat compared to typical MMOs, but the roles are still very clear, especially in terms of being a healer - others can dabble to help, but you will have an actual dedicated healer (whether that be a Templar who is an obvious choice due to class skills - which allows him to use any weapon he wants, or any other class whi has dedicated points in using a Restoration staff )

I have a key too. PM me if you'd like beta access this weekend.

Sorry, code was taken.

Played the beta abit now. And I am shocked over how bad it is.

Haha, gave it an hour, did you?

Not going to be for some people, I guess. If you only played for an hour then you only saw the intro crap, and I admit that is not the way I would have the game start.

Well since all my friends have pre-ordered, I was going to do so. I was looking at the available options previously, before I had made up my mind, and was unsure which one I wanted. With 3 tiers or available pricing at $60, $80, and $100, I was finally decided to go for the gusto and get the full retail imperial edition. Only to find out it seems to be completely sold out everywhere that I can tell. Ugh.
