Only issue I can see is keyboard size (aside from the inevitable bugs on initial release). That said, I typed on a portable Palm keyboard (fold-up travel keyboards) with some effort, but on the whole it was pretty slow, and a relative bitch to figure out. I had to type at half speed. I'd much rather lug my nice, powerful laptop with a full-sized keyboard around. I'll take 3 hours of power over 6 hours of next to nothing.

I've played with one and found the keyboard unusable. I do have pretty big hands, and can be a little fat-fingered, but I can't type on one at all.

I had that problem for a while, but I found that I was able to adapt after half a day of typing on it. The only problem can be in having "weak" keys on the keyboard. For me, I have to hit the bottom half of the L key in order for it to register, so sometimes it doesn't type L when I want it to. Luckily, I have gotten used to it and it's only the L key.

I considered getting one to keep at work to surf the net during breaks/lunch.

I'll wait for prices to drop, kinks to get worked out and better specs.

Yep, that's what I bought mine for, we have one pc in the lunchroom, and I don't want to be the guy who hogs it all the time...

I ordered a black 4G surf from ZZF, hope I don't brick it hacking it 😀

Yep I would keep it locked in my cubicle drawer, what's the battery life like?

Around 1.5 hours with WiFi is all I need.

About 3 hours

I have the surf and I probably get around 2.3-2.5 in practice. I'm definitely getting the 6 cell battery when it comes out for 5+ hours of run time.

I used my wife's EEE last night for about 30 minutes surfing the web. Battery life was still at 90%. To answer someone's question about what EEE stood for, it's Easy to work. Easy to learn. Easy to play. For what it's meant to do, it's awesome. It's great to keep on your nightstand or keep in the car to use at hotspots.. or even on the couch while watching TV. I upgraded hers to 1gb ram when I first got it. It made quite a bit of a difference in snappiness. It's totally silent unless the little fan is spinning. It didn't come on last night while I was using it in the bed. Even if it is on, it's more quiet than a whisper.

We don't use it entirely too much, but I think it's still worth the $400.

Would be great to bring to school when bored in class. I have a laptop but it's a bit much to tote around if not necessary. Then again, I already own it, so maybe I should.

I've been thinking about trading in my current laptop for a pink Asus Eee. Not sure if I'm ready to jump on the purchase yet though... since I'm worried about its size and about how it looks so much like a toy (especially since I'd be getting the pink one). Guess I'll just have to stop buy Best Buy and check out this little machine myself.

I don't see it as a substitute for any real laptop. It's a teeny little machine with a teeny keyboard and an even teenier screen. Definitely try before you buy.

I have one, it's freaking amazing. People ogle it, and some even think it's fake. It's that small.

Just read up on what it's meant for before purchasing. Although mine runs the Full Desktop Xandros Linux really well and is very responsive, don't think you're getting a full size laptop. If you need to do serious number crunching, your average $700 laptop is probably going to be about twice as powerful as an Asus EeePC and will probably serve you much better.

I bring mine to work with me and surf the intarwebz for 4-5 hours a day on it, use it for PDF-reading (science papers, etc) and paper-writing, and it kicks ass at that sort of productivity usage.

By the way, I opted for the 4G Surf model - almost exactly like the 4G model, but without the (crappy) built-in camera, and it's $50 less - I payed $349 for mine, then added a 2gig RAM stick for 20 bucks. Hotness.

Oh, the keyboard... see, trying before you buy is a really bad idea, unless "trying" means "taking it home for a couple of days and actually learning how to type on it." At first, the keyboard was very irritating - in fact in the store (I went by a Microcenter here in Houston) I almost turned away from the purchase because my big hands felt really crowded and clumsy on the keyboard.

But after a couple days of just general usage - emailing/browsing - it's very natural and easy to type on. (Really not joking, I have very large hands...)

Interesting. I had no idea that these mini laptops were coming to the market. I've always wanted 2-3lb laptops with minimal stuff for cheap. So Eee PC and Cloudbook are the two big names?

I really hope the next version has a better screen. I don't care for the speakers on the sides anyways. It doesn't really need more than 4GB of memory as long as I can use memory cards and usb drives.

I have a 4GB that I've converted to Windows and used semi-extensively on days I don't feel like bringing my Macbook to the office.

I don't really get these things, it seems like they're too large and powerful to fit into the ultra mobile category, and too underpowered to replace actual notebooks.

I've been waiting for the HPC/PPC market to evolve ever since the downfall of the Jornada, but the EEE seems like a step in a completely different direction.

I am so happy that I got to play with one before I bought it. While the screen looks ok, it is far too underpowered and too low a resolution to do anything on it. Youtube videos even looked choppy on the damned thing.

I ended up buying a regular laptop, and while not as portable, it is 100x more useful for daily tasks.

I'd probably take an EEEPC if it were free, but I honestly think that it is a piece of junk.

Youtube videos run fine for me in windows.

*coughs* ...twice as powerful.

4mb cache Core2 Duo laptop versus an Intel EeePC mobile processor.

I would rather spend a few extra hundred dollars to get a 13.1" laptop off of an e-tailer.

Pff, the FS/TR forum prolly has better stuff for 400 bucks.

BUT.. everyone has their own opinions! Soo.. if you want one, no one ain't stoppin' you.

I bought a black one and installed XP SP3 on it and as soon as I can get a working charger for it, it will become my 3rd arm.

ME WANT.

Ever since I first saw them. They're badass little things, at least on paper.

I think my $400 laptop is probably twice as powerful, but that's beside the point. 😛

Any B&M stores sell these things? Someone mentioned Best Buy?

I read on wikipedia that the linux kernal is compiled with a parameter that limits it to 1 GB of RAM - was it difficult to recompile it to allow 2 GB?
