Educate me on starter DSLRs

I'm from an old school of though, hence I prefer a 40mm lens for FF camera or a 35mm for standard work. I found 85mm is a bit long and prefer 70~75mm for FF camera, however I can work with 85mm focal length. I found that I rarely use greater focal length than 100~105mm. To me a 24mm is a much more useful focal length than any thing that is greater than 85mm.

IMHO, an all purpose lens would be a 24~70mm or 24~105mm, and then add a 200mm or greater as well as a 20mm wide if the user have the need for more dedicated focal length. Perhaps a macro lens would a good addition if the user want to play around with macro subject.

You are not going to get infinite DOF because diffraction is a caveat.

But thought you do get infinite DOF.

The caveat is the diffraction degradation is worse than the optimal aperture being out of focus.

Sorry for my bad writing. You are right that you will get more DOF, but the degradation more than negates any DOF that you may get.

me again!

Had my D5100 for about 4 months now, and the stupid battery won't charge. This is the battery and charger that came with the camera kit itself. The orange light on the charge DIMLY flashes, and if I recall, when I first received the camera, the light flashed BRIGHTLY while charging. This is only 4 months OLD!!! I am PO'ed!!!

I can't figure out if it's the batter or the charger or what. $50 each too!

you should still be in warranty, so you can try contacting nikon

have you tried to clean the battery terminals? :S

maybe the batteries voltage is too low for the charger to recharge it :\ (happens on some rechargeables when you discharge them too much, don't know if it applies to Lithium-ions also)

All Nikon equipment. Terminals are clean on the battery and the charger.
I will admit, I'm contemplating being a pr!ck and doing a buy/replace/return at Best Buy.

If Nikon offered an option to have them send you a new battery + charger, while yours is in the mail (they hold your CC# until they get your old stuff), you wouldn't have to contemplate this.

I am sorry to hear you have issues with your camera.

Please try with another battery and charger if available.
This way you could determine which of the items is defective.

If all that doesn't help you should send the camera in for a check-up with all power accessories.
