My family comes from the agricultural village, Navatalav, which is located in the state of Gujarat.
I have to say, where I'm from, It really is a opposite lifestyle. I haven't been there since the 3rd grade, but my parents have, they said it's changed, but from what I remember, We had unexpected power outages (now they are scheduled), no indoor plumbing (now we do), and had an outhouse (when indoor plumbing came, so did toilets

).
Being born and raised in Oakland County, Michigan (Which I'm sure is in the top 20, if not top 10, richest counties in the U.S.), I remember when I went to India, I was constantly nagging at my parents saying, "Can we go home yet?" Man I was a little i love you. I'd kill for some freetime to go visit India now, but being in college, I have a feeling it won't happen for another 4-5 years.
From personal experience, I know any westerner that goes there might have a hard time getting acclimated. The Indian palate is tottally 180 from the U.S. If you have a weak stomach, or can't handle heat, there's gonna be problems.

Also, get used to beggers coming up to you on public streets... they'll smell the American in you a mile (or should I say kilometer) away. Driving is like suicide to foriengers. Semi-trucks (tata's) are known to overtake on 2 lane roads. :Q
As for Indian movies and music, I regrettably never got into it. Growing up, I never sat down with my parents to watch hindi movies, and I never had an interest, but that changed in like late middle school. Thing is, now I have to use subtitles, where as my cousins who watched Hindi films like every weekend since they were babies just picked up on it! And in high school, I started to get into hindi music too, which was funny, because my parents are only accustomed to me listening to mainly Rap, Classical, or Rock, and when they heard the hindi music, they were like, "WHAAAAA?!! WE DID'NT KNO YOU LIKE HINDI MUSIC." LOL, they started getting all happy and making a big deal out of it.
Anywho, I hope all these haters on India don't change your decision to learn more more about it.
