Excuse me, but that's only in rural areas . . . in fact, prove to me that the plague is still in India.

And if it is . . . ONLY COUNTRY? What about Africa? South-East Asia?

stay calm.. it's a joke from a TV show that he's repeating there

It's a nice place, but the culture is fading. I was VERY dissapointed this time when I went to India. It just doesn't feel the same anymore :(

If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask me

Really? Which part of India are you from/do you visit?

Because the places I go . . . sure, they are becoming a little western, but the basic traditions are still there!

My parents are from New Delhi, so that's where I spent most of my time.

Since we're Hindus, eating meat is something our religion says we shouldn't do. My family eats meat except my mom and we don't make it at home besides using meat slices in sandwiches occasionally. In India, where you'd expect them to be a bit more strict, have begun cooking it in their own home. This time we went and one day my cousin refused to eat dinner unless he got some chicken. Dinner was already cooked and with the large number of people probably starving at the same time, why waste food? After his mom saying no, he ordered a pizza with chicken toppings.

That's just one small example. Another one is the whole damn cell phone craze going on over there. My cousin has a $400 cell phone :Q Personally, I can't justify that much, unless you're actually using the features on it. In his case, COMPLETE waste of money. That's just another example.

I won't get into this much because I'll be just asking for flame, but dating is generally something people are against over there. He met with a girl tons of times, whose mother thought she was doing something else. Oh, and my cousin's mother knew about all this.

Now, you might think, "Oh, just one kid." All his friends were like this, his sister was very similar with her own issues, and going around India in general it just doesn't feel how I'd like it to.

I basically hit the main large points that I noticed in MY trip. I'm sure there are families out there that aren't changing as much, but honestly, I don't like this change. They're losing their culture a LOT. I used to think I'm cultureless because we don't do a lot of Indian things at my home, but India is going to an extreme. Everyone there is becoming even more "Americanized" than we are ourselves.

I'd appreciate if you guys don't flame me for what I said

One last thing: I asked my history teacher why terrorism began, namely the 9/11 attacks. He said the western influence was spreading and nothing was being done from our side. After going to India, I have to agree with that. People in other countries have the wrong idea of people in America and have lost lots of their culture and way of life.

Edit: I reread what I typed and I'm not expecting many of you to agree with me. You kind of have to have an idea of India already and lived through some of this, otherwise it's not that big of a deal

wow really?

Because my Mom's parents are in New Delhi, my Dad's mother is in Baroda, Gujarat and the rest of my family is either in Bombay or Pune. Never have I come across the meat thing. Almost all of my family there has a cell phone but they're they cheaper kind (the old Nokias)

They don't date.

That's pretty amazing . . .

EDIT : Yeah, it has become a bit westernized (I can tell since I've gone 7 or 8 times in the past 13 years), but not that much . . . .

Yeah, see, you understand. After going to India this time, my respect for my grandmother grew a whole lot. I see her as a wise person who is very kind. At one point my cousin's mother was crying about something, she kept laughing through it. One of the things I learned is that the elderly have seen lots in life and should be given lots of respect.

True that, but then again I'd say a lot of them are senile old cooks who've lost touch with reality.

Well, of course . . . I take it that your grandmother is at least 60 years old, meaning she was there for India's Independence and the time of Gandhi, etc

I went about 4 years before this most recent trip, which I took this past summer, so mostly compared to that

I might be comparing to traditional values too though :p

I was born in India (New Delhi), moved to the states when i was three, and have lived there since. (i say there because i'm taking a semester off and am in Delhi right now). I visited every summer since 1989, so any changes that have been taking place don't seem so great to me. However, within the last 10 years, India has become a MUCH more "international" place, what with the privatisation of several key market sectors, growth of internet in india, reductions on import duties etc. All this has made western information and goods easily available and popular.

A lot of how "western" a family here is will have to do with their class (income wise, not caste). A rich family will have the option of adopting a western lifestyle, or sticking with a traditional indian one. Middle-class down do not have this option, and the disparity between the wealthy and the middle class is HUGE.

Rich teenagers are incredibly "americanized," they would feel right at home in any big city in the US without too much adapting. They all drink, date, hook up, go clubbing, etc etc. I speak for this section of the population because I have the most exposure to it, in New Delhi, Bombay, and Ahmedabad.

Zinta and Rai are hot. :D

anything more you wanna know? ask!

Actually India belongs to Pakistan so technically Kashmir belongs to Pakistan too. :)

Some immigrants from there just raised the price of my beer $1.00. Therefore it can be assumed that people from India are assholes.

You sound like you know what you're talking about, but I'm not sure about one thing. I found this americanization to be a lot among the middle class, obviously it influences the rich more, but none of my cousins even have a honda civic
