Edmunds 2005 Full-Size Sedan Comparison Test

Base, well equipped at 27k.

I'd say the conclusions are fair. Buick sucks, period, and the five hundred is profoundly underpowered for a full size sedan.

The new Avalon is *very* nice, but when fully loaded - hello sticker shock!

agreed, however with the AWD and the CVT, the five hundred really isnt that bad as long as you go into it not expecting a sports car.

A high level of amenities is expected when you run up a bill of almost $38,000. We adjust for price disparities in our scoring, but it's easy to look at our loaded-up Avalon Limited and think, "No wonder it won." So we compared an unoptioned XLS model ($31,340) feature for feature, and guess what? It still comes with seven of the 10 items we consider important for a full-size sedan and would also have won this test by a wide margin.

The Crown Vic would mop the floor with all of them.

lol
are you kidding?
I hope so.

Unlike a lot of barebones cars the Avalon's XL with nothing in it is still a nice, well equipped car. It's got the basic power features, alloy wheels, four wheel ABS, airbags out the whazoo, etc. This, plus a 280 horsepower engine, Toyota's far superior reliability/resale, and 23/31 EPA.

No I'm not kidding. The Crown Vic with it's superior reliability, modular 4.6, and the reputation for being a police cruiser makes it the best car ever. I make my whole family drive them too, because I'm too stubborn to consider other cars. Crown Vic ya heard?

funny that they only got the V6 in the Chrysler, but a Hemi would have come out under the price of the Avalon they used.

Maybe not.. base invoice price on a Hemi 300 is $30,626 (MSRP $33,095). That's with no options, and the Avalon they used was $31,340.

LOL at the idea Crown Vic has superior reliability to an Avalon. Tell that to your mechanic and see how long he can keep a straight face. If your "Best Car Ever" is a Crown Vic, I assume your "Best Beer Ever" is Bud Light, and your "Best Clothing Designer Ever" is Mr. Dockers.

Nice 😀

Actually was it MSN or Edmunds puts it in the top 10 vehicles to own for its class?
Because of what she says, its why every cop car and cab out there is a Vic

I don't need a mechanic, because the Crown Vic is the most reliable car ever. What part of that do you not understand? No broken parts, no need for a mechanic. Capeesh? And Dockers sucks, I only wear Dickies with my suspenders and my cane.

The reason it's used so often as a police car is that it's the only reasonably-priced American full-size car that has continuously had RWD and a V-8 over the years. Large fleets, like police departments and cab companies, are so invested in Ford parts, and experienced in working on them, that it makes sense for them to stick with the Vic.

BTW, I think Crown Vics are fine - they're inexpensive, reasonably reliable, and perform respectably - but they're certainly nothing special.

"For example, in calendar 2003 Power said the Mercury Grand Maquis, Buick LeSabre, and Ford Crown Victoria ranked as the top full-size cars in long-term dependability after three years. "

So according to JD powers its more than that

Best bang for buck, including reliability of a LARGE car

Around here, a lot of cop cars are now Chevy Impalas.

They were going to those around here....and then to the Dodge Intrepids and now are going back to the Ford Vic again. Those have been the best cars for their jobs, the police usually hate the intrepids here.
