now: it's a dns problem! i can connect by ip, so how can i browse by my network places?!?

then:
desktop & laptop 1 have firewall turned off. they can now share files & printer between the two of them, no prob. laptop 2 has had firewall turned on, firewall turned off, scope of exceptions changed from subnet to all, is on the same workgroup, everything. it still cannot see the other computers on the network, nor can it connect to the shared printer. just for clarification: network of three computers, 2 of which can see each other fine, 3rd cannot (but can still go online through wireless network). no idea why. would like to keep sp2 if possible, will uninstall if necessary (but i have no idea why it shouldn't work.) need help, tia.

first:
every computer on my 3 pc network got sp2 recently. they can all still go online but they can't share the printer attached to the desktop or find each other (ie, no shares). windows firewall is manually down on each, all are on the same mshome workgroup, no love. help?

update: i enabled the firewall on every computer, changed the scope for all 4 ports to allow all computers to access, not just the ones on the subnet, and now two of the comuters can see each other, but for some reason the 3rd is still being uncooperative. :-/

1. Make sure all computers are on the same workgroup.
2. Make sure File & Printer Sharing is enabled on all of their firewalls (I'm presuming they are all SP2).
3. Make sure Simple File Sharing is enabled on all computers under Explorer options. This isn't an ideal option in the long run. Go to www.ezlan.net for more info on good sharing techniques.

im assuming your running a router with broadband connection.. turn off all software firewalls and let the NAT in the router filter everything and save your network some overhead from filtering 2 processes.

i tried turning off the xp firewall on the computer connected to the printer (was on before with the scope of file & print sharing allowed from any), and now it can't find any computers on the network (but laptop 1 can still print to it and find its shared folders). then i turned off the xp firewall on all of the computers, and laptop 2 is still unable to see the other computers or printer after restarting. so to sum up: firewall off on all 3 computers. laptop 1 can see desktop & print, desktop can't see laptop 1. laptop 2 and desktop completely unable to see each other. is it time to uninstall sp 2? is it impossible for 3 computers to be networked under it? my router is a netgear wgr614 v3, if it matters. and all 3 computers were happily networked before sp 2 was installed

Can laptop 2 ping the other computers? Can it connect when you try by IP address?

In other words, rather than trying to get to the desktop's shared folders through "My Network Places" can you get there if you go to start-->Run-->\\192.168.0.1 (or whatever the IP is).

If you can connect that way, it's some kind of DNS problem.
