I am not sure he even got his high school diploma.
 
A high school diploma isn't a requirement for construction. One of my favorite guys dropped out in 10th grade I think. He's a wizard on a machine, and he can school a lot of the engineers that showup on site. He might not have the numbers, but he can tell you what the problems are and how to fix them.

Gizmo's just fucking lazy. I'll be a ballerina before he becomes a construction worker.

Maybe he's just playing the long game, when everything is said and done and all his plan falls into place he'll be running SpaceX and building section 8 housing on Mars. Free laptops available.

I mean it sounds more like that when you get some spending money you are going to buy some people you like some nice presents.
Which is fine and laudable but setting up a charity is a bit more than that.
What's the aim of your charity, what problem is it solving and is that the best way of solving it?

Get your construction job, improve your life. Buying people $2k laptops out of your paycheck isn't sustainable or necessary.
 
I just want to say again: do not give a real laptop of any specs to a 3-4 year old, or a 5 year old, 6 years old starts to get into "maybe", depends a lot on the specific kid.
They make appropriate laptop-style toys for kids that age that can be quite cheap and still educational.

Yep. My uncle can build or fix anything and dropped out in 9th or 10th grade. We have a lot of over-educated folks out there, and education is great, but we need to get rid of this idea that you're a loser if you don't go to college. I've found that the kind of people who can quickly look at a problem in the trades and come up with a solution can also do office jobs really well. They just often don't want to sit in front of a computer all day and I absolutely get it.
 
I think my daughter was 6 when I got her her first computer. I can't say anything about it either way. I didn't help or hurt anything. Aside from playing some dumb games, she didn't care that much. I was hoping she'd get interested in tech, but that didn't happen.
 
I'm on board with giving kids under 6 supervised access to a computer, but not their own dedicated laptop. I sat my partner's kid in front of TuxPaint (on a desktop) when she was 3-4, that was a good start and helped her learn how to interact with a mouse and cursor. I let her play with a junky old laptop before that, not much useful activity happened. There's a couple kid's laptops that came from thrift stores that she did have fun with, and were built to handle the way kids that age tend to handle things.

If anything, the "uneducated" people who are building things and doing physical jobs are really the ones that are keeping the world going. If it wasn't for them we would have nothing. The bureaucrats wouldn't even have pencils to push, or paper.
 
They're super in demand too. $14,000 to fix the landing pad on my driveway. $3,700 to add a water line, propane line, and drain in my basement. I'd like to get a 220V line in the basement, but god knows what that will cost and how many months it would take them to get around to it.
 
Another reason I want to give laptops instead of desktops:

I think it'll be a great escape for a child who's dealing with abuse at home, The kid can take the gaming laptop to a library, the park, or a friends house instead of having to be stuck at home.

And if the child is a "foster child" and live in a situation where they're in a room with a bunch of bunk-beds, I think there's no way they could have a desktop setup in that situation.

Any parent or guardian who is shitty enough to abuse their child will instantly sell any laptop provided to them or use it as another tool for abuse and control.

If the abuse is severe the kid should definitely go to a foster home, and as I said before:

I feel it'll be difficult to get a bunch of kids their own desktop setup if they're sharing their room with several other kids.
 
There are a lot of shitty parents who would sell the laptop that aren't physically abusing their kids to the degree the state would remove them from their parents and put them in a foster home...that's a fairly high bar to remove a kid from their home. And it's not like the kid can just decide they'd rather live in a foster home.

I think if I give the laptops to foster kids there's less chance of the guardian taking the laptop for themselves because the child could just tell their social worker their foster parents are stealing from them.
