Yeah but at that point it's not portable and I'd rather get the better performance that a desktop brings.

I get that they serve a purpose but what purpose does giving them out charitably serve?
People need to pay for food and rent. Yeah people need access to the internet but a gaming laptop isn't necessary for that. Would it be better to give 10 people a cheap laptop or 1 person a gaming laptop?

How are you supposed to "learn" how to make CGI animations without a high performance PC? I doubt you could just show up to Pixar and get hired without at least demonstrating that you're able to make CGI competently, YOU NEED TO PRACTICE FIRST!

And they aren't doing any of that stuff on laptops.

Maybe that would change if I popularized gaming laptops.

You can practice on any computer. A gaming laptop is no more suitable than a cheap laptop. Obviously it's better for playing games but you aren't going to be rendering the next Pixar film on either.

When my son was 13 or so and was into computers (as most teenage boys are) he was convinced that he wanted to go into game design. He put a fair bit of effort into it and I was impressed with how quickly he grasped stuff.
Cue a several year campaign of me subtly trying to convince him that coding games is a terrible career where you get treated terribly.
A lot of years later he's in on the security side of computing, about to finish university and has several decent job offers before even finishing!

Games are fun to play but it's a pretty brutal industry where the people actually making the games get treated like commodities.

I wanted to bring up, the reason I wanted the laptops to be a console-killer is because I feel like you don't really need any more performance than that.

A long as your computer is on par with the most powerful console (which is the PS5Pro) you should be in the clear until the next console comes out.

I posted this in a another thread a year ago, but here is a father giving his daughters Alienware laptops. These laptops have the GTX 8800m which is the first laptop GPU with CUDA support.

Look at small form factor machines and mini PCs on Ebay, refirb/upgrade them, resell for a fair price. Easier than laptops and more versatile. People in need don't need gaming laptops, they just need a basic computer they can use to go online and apply for jobs, or do basic work if they find a WFH job, etc. Giving stuff away is not sustainable, you need to at very least break even. Ideally make a bit of profit so it's worth while, your time is still worth something.

If you are actually that serious about it look at registering as a non profit once you're established and you've done enough that you think this can go somewhere. Then you can get donations which would go towards getting PCs to refirbish. Try to get in with companies that are offloading life cycled machines that are still going to be very modern and usable and since you're a charity they might even give you them. Now is a good time with windows 10 end of life as all the PCs that don't have TPM will be life cycled but are still perfectly capable machines. Put windows 10 or Linux on them.
