Two things comes to my mind

1) Your friend or someone else played joke on you

2) Riaa decided to send you an email with spook email header.

FBI as general practice don't tell people that they are under investigation as it would defeat the purpose of investigation after all you can destroy all of the evidence of having pirate music on your computer.

Well just to be safe, invest in several hundred of these and put at least 20 of em in every door frame that leads out of your house. That way when they remove your comp and take it for their 60 day scanning thing, it go boom.

so call the fbi and ask if they emailed you. Make them tell you again what it is in regards to. i.e. don't bring up the subject matter of the email until its clear that they actually are investigating you on the issues in the email.

Then what?
Do I be like well I have never used Kazaa......

Hang up and microwave your computer. :p

Or just buy all the CDs/software that you downloaded. Then if wouldn't be a "crime" anymore..or would it??

Somehow I doubt the average warezmonkey has the cash to purchase even a tenth of the stuff they download. :p

I used to be ... ahem ... "grey area" myself, but thanks to student discounts and working for a university, I cleaned myself out. :D

Nope, not according to the RIAA. According to them, you have no fair use rights, so you are not allowed to buy a CD and make a rip of it onto your own computer, even if you do not share said rip (the ripping of the CD is perfectly legal, despite what the RIAA says, but the sharing is illegal).

i doubt there is a school account that doesn't allow POP or IMAP access, and only web like you say. Find out how to d/l your email to client like Outlook, and view the headers from there.

Somebody's messing with you.

First, even Kazaa can't tell if you are using the original Kazaa or Kazaa Lite, there is no way the FBI could either. Second, there is no way they could get your real name either.

One of your friends is trying to freak you out and it worked. :p

That's one way. A guy I know has a big electromagnet underneath his drives. 1 flip of a switch, it nukes ALL of his data. Showed me an example on an old p133. Computer at maximum distance from old monitor. Turns it on, my watch stops (he paid for it later), the monitor showed all the data but it was being sucked towards the magnet, and the computer drive had a head crash into the platter. Very interesting...

Wasted a 400MB harddrive too.

Try forwarding it to a "real" email account, at least a tiny bit of the stuff may be retained (different mail servers and clients and software can leave all sorts of whacky stuff in headers).

And I am now the center of a big practical joke.

Hmm there is a reason they used an account in which no headers can be read...

Thank you for everyones help. And input. I will now go sit in a corner.

LOL, just reread what I wrote. Not the data, but what was on the screen. Turned neat colors too. Hurts the eyes though. Mine at least.

That's why they put a "degauss" function on those things. :)

Even if the authorities were after you for file sharing, it wouldn't be the FBI doing it. I suspect it would be your state sheriff or a similar jurisdiction.

The FBI has bigger things to do.

I think it's a hoax.

Exactly. There would be no reason to inform you of the investigation. Even the FBI isn't that stupid.

I don't think they operate like that. I thought the way they do things is you are served with cease and desist papers first... I don't know for sure though.
