EDIT: Got One!!!How Can I get a Credit Card?

Kishan

Platinum Member
Ok. I got approved for a Citi Platinum for students with a $2k limit. Should I still get a secured card? Thanks for recommending the Citi card guys!
Thanks,
Kishan

I really feel it is important to have good credit, but I don't know how to start. Heres some info:

18 years old.

Have my own checking account in my name with my own debit card since June 2003 at Washington Mutual. The account has about $2600 in there now, and is used CONSTANTLY. I don't have a savings account though.

Full Time student at SUNY Stony Brook (Freshman.)

I work, and have an annual income of about $18k. I also get financial aid for about $8k.

What should I do to build up good credit, and how can I get some credit cards? I spend probably about $1000 bucks a month, so it would make sense to use it towards good credit.
Thanks,
Kishan

you don't need a credit card to have good credit. If you have student loans, car payments ... etc... anything like that will also build credit.

I'm 24, have a credit card that i have NEVER used in 6 years - but make car payments and student loan payments and have still excellent credit.

personally, i'd say stay away from a credit card if you don't need it -- just becuase its asking for trouble, and you seem to be making enough money to get by fine without using one.

i do have some student loans (2k a year) so thats not too bad. However, for car payments, its not in my name, so I give the money to my mother and she takes care of it from there. I think that really stinks since its $250 a month, and I'm on time with the payment. It would look good on my rcord since I have been paying this for about 18 months.

Just go ahead and apply for the Citi® Dividend Platinum Select® Card for College Students. Good chance you'll get approved and its an awesome card.

There you go. Student = easy credit cards. Just find any application out of the millions floating around your campus. Fill it out, and you are good to go.

And yes, do get a CC. Very helpful, and very beneficial if you use it correctly. Heck at your numbers, you could get $10-$50 a month in cash for free just for having one.

If you really need a card you'll definately be approved for a secured card. Go for an issuer that you'll stay with when you don't need secured anymore, any of the big ones. What's if YOUR wallet?

I've got loads of credit cards and I"m still young too. Basically, I established good credit by first being a user under my parents, then paying off loans, etc. Oh, and never close accounts/cancel cards.

Once you get into the credit card game, there are lots of things to do, various gift cards, cash back, bonuses. No more glory days of I-bond flipping with credit card purchases though. These days, people like to play with 0% balance transfers.

Thanks for all the replies. I applied for a Citi Platinum Select Card for College Students. A couple of months ago, my brother told me to apply for an Amex Blue for students. Fvcking moron. Needless to say I was rejected.
Thanks,
Kishan

Yeah, I can't be a user under my paents though.

Go on campus and fill out one of the million student credit card forms. You'll most likely get accepted and get a card with no perks. However, in a year or two then you can start applying for the 'cool cards'

Go to your local bank and open up a secured credit card. You will need to place a deposit for it, but it will be what your credit line is. If you put $500 down, you will get a $500 credit limit. Wait 6 months to a year and then apply for another card.

Didn't do the dividends one, simply because I was afraid that I would be rejected. I looked at the differences between the two cards, and the vanilla Platinum said "No minimum income or co-signer required." I already have one mark from Amex due to my moronic brother. I didn't want another. I would have loved the dividends though. Will do later🙂

there's nothing wrong with your brother's recommendation. it's not his fault you have no credit history.

apply for a student card at either amex or discover

btw i just came out of 4 years from stony. one advice that i can give you is stony is what you make of it... if you work hard you'll make some friends and have a lot of fun. if you get lazy... then nobody can help you!

avoid WST 103 by martha mockus, and any honors classes, and a comp sci major

good luck

He knows that I have no credit history, and he told me that I should lie about my income in the application to Amex.

That may have actually done you good. I was originally rejected from getting a Fleet Visa CC after opening up an account with their banks (was my very first application so I didnt even have a credit check on my history). Within a month I had applied for the Platinum Select for College students and was approved. A month later I applied for the Dividends card and was approved.

hey thanks. It kinda sucks since I'm a commuter, but its a decent school. Its weird not having any real, true friends though. But people are friendly and kind, as am I.

Everyone I know who goes to Stonybrook is a commuter. Beautiful La Valle Stadium. Played there last year in an LIC football game.
