I went for the suggestion:
Lock the door, turn off all the lights and whew.....this is scary $hitt.

Reminds me of the scary feel of resident evil playing on the regulator map in far cry.

good stuff.

Is it just me? Seems as if the biggest Doom 3 fans are also the biggest Nvidia boosters. Noticed many of this lot disliked far cry. This makes it difficult to decide if I want to drop the cash for this game now, or (if it is so so) wait until it comes bundled with a card or something. Guess I will have to read a few unbiased reviews. Would hate like hell to buy a game that has as a major purpose - promoting a video card company. I really enjoyed Doom 2 - even played it again a few months ago, but find many fps - boring. So is the creator just an old has been? ;)

Well I'm one of the Doom3 supporters and own a Radeon 9800Pro and I really enjoy Far Cry as well. Honestly I expected to be one of the D3 critics but as it turns out the game is far beyond what I expected. Don't get me wrong, it's a FPS and it's linear (so far anyway) but the graphics are stunning and it's the atmosphere makes the game. I know a baddie is going to spawn or jump out of the dark but when it happens I still jump and this is from a guy who laughed when he read that Doom3 was going to scare you. ;)

I play this game in the dark with my 22" FE2111SB 12" in front of my nose, and my satellite speakers around me, and I jump when things happen, and am tense while I'm creeping around in the dark.

From what I surmise by your icon Rollo, do you think it would be well advised to get a physical before indulging in anymore late night game play?

Exactly.

Also it'll be one of the de facto benchmarks for awhile.

Hey guys.... Doom 3 sounded like it may suck from the Xbit review. I do want to play it still, maybe after I play Rome Total War in September. If a lot of games will be based on doom, it may be a good idea to keep my GT (soon to be Ultra).

Question on future games... does the engine show that the graphics of these future games will be awesome while the game play / AI will stink? I like to play shooters that you can use some strategy in. For me I don't think you can run and shoot through Far Cry if you want to live... you have to sneak around and take different angles. For a game with running and shooting (but still some thinking) I like the massive multiplayer battlefield series.

Will this engine allow for smart AI or just linear walk and shoot? Any games you know of planned for this engine other than Quake (not my favorite).

I love D3, and am playing it on a rather antiquated, ATi-powered system (P4 1.6A at 2.2, 9700 Pro). The gameplay is fairly routine FPS stuff, but IMO it is the best-finished, most polished FPS ever made (which I find a little surprising given that id has a bit of a history of phoning in its games from a gameplay standpoint). It creates the most immersive environment of any game I've seen, and I find it genuinely scary and fun to play. I liked Far Cry too, but IMO D3 creates a more authentic gameplay world, and I really appreciate that it allows unlimited saves - to me limiting the savegames is a cheap way of creating "tension" by annoying the player. IMO D3 is far more impressive technologically as well.

Yes, over a null modem serial cable it worked at least.

But was it built into the game? At the time the net wasn't so prevalent.

Quake 2 didn't even have MP out of the gate. It was added in a patch fairly early on.

I answered this earlier in the thread. Doom/Doom2, Heretic, etc., all had multiplayer from the start, HOWEVER, it was restricted to IPX/SPX only. What this means (for the non-network savvy) is that you could play it only on local non-routed LANs, but not on the internet at the time unless you used a service such as Kali or software such as DWANGO. Quake supported multiplayer right out of the gate, but the netcode was very poor, which is why QuakeWorld was later released.

Separate the internet from multiplayer already. There were people with networks well before the WWW popularized use of the Internet.

Doom and Doom 2 Co-op was the shiznet back when.

All the mods for those engines were cool too.

I remember the BubbleGum Crisis and Aliens mods.

I totally agree with this. I got it expecting tons of monsters to come flying at me out of no where and good graphics. Instead I got a game that looks pretty damn good and has tons of atmosphere but the monsters, death, and carnage are a lil lacking. Eh, I guess I'm just getting too old for this stuff.

My bad..... I have a few years on you. BTW, you've descriptive narrative sold me on the game; I'm going to get it this weekend, send my girlfriend home to her mother, and see how close I can get to a coronary.

You do realize that ANY opengl game will "make nvidia look good"?
Some people out there seem to know exactly what Doom 3 was going to be, so they don't care about anything else.
You obviously do not.

If a lot of games will be based on doom, it may be a good idea to keep my GT (soon to be Ultra).
I don't think performance in this game will directly correlate to performance in games based off its engine. The NV40 will likely still be ahead, but it could be by a lesser margin.

YES the game DOES START slow. I'm about 5 hrs into the game, and it really has changed. Once u get the plasma rifle, then post your opinions. Just give it atleast that much. Uve waited years, atleast give it a few hrs before judging it.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but, wasn't it John Romero that left "id" due to differences over the decision for Doom3 to be made. Carmack, Cloud, etc wanted to make Doom3, Romero (and I believe others) were dead set against it.

Wouldn't it be kinda unfortunate for "id" if they were right?

wow all this tallk really makes me wanna try the game out at least. sorry for jacking up your thread op, but let me just ask one thing : what do you consinder a minimal environment to somewhat appreciate the awe-inspring graphics? right now i have radeon 8500 and it stutters in farcry @ 800*600 with mid settings. any cheap and quick way to upgrade? i stopped playing fps games for a while tho, if i go all out and get a 6800/x800 it wouldnt do me any good.. i just wanna try doom3 and thats it :)

Have you not seen Quake3 and RTCW benchmarks? They are very similar when it comes to the kind of hardware they run best on. There are tons of other games based on the Quake3 engine, and all perform best on nVidia hardware AFAIK.

The more I read your posts the more I think you are massively biased towards ATi, GeneralGerivous. No offense intended; it seems that most of the people on the video forum are biased.

I dunno, I'm quite pleased with the performance of my R9700PRO in Doom3. I'm running at 1280x1024 (high settings), and I rarely dip below 30FPS during the game. In the timedemo benchmark I scored ~29FPS, but that is a very intense portion of the game. You can buy a refurbished 9700PRO for around $130; that would be my choice in that price range ATM. If you have ~$285, you can get a 6800NU which would double the 9700PRO's performance in Doom3.
