I'm dissaponted with graphics in Doom 3, low-res textures and monsters look like they were made of plastic

I just met something other than an imp or a zombie, and now the game is really starting to heat up a notch and I'm becoming quite impressed. Parts of the military base is starting to be taken over by "overgrowth", ie, hell. It's getting really creepy, and my enjoyment factor is going up.

What is this little something other than an imp or a zombie. Is it Pinky or perhaps, wonderful Cyberdemon (probably not Cyber demon, still seems too early in the game).

I dont know what doom III you're running, but everything look excellent. What game do you think looks the best. Obviously if Doom III looks bad in your opinion, some game has to have the title of good!

OK, i am over 2 hours into the game and it is BORING. :p

Boring . .. boring . . . boring.

Scary? CreepY? NAW . . . more like "gross". :p

For "creepy AND scary" - i.e. "real atmosphere" (NOT "superb" graphics + "boring" gameplay) - TRY Thief - Deadly Shadows . . . ;)

and i had ZERO expectations (i never played the earlier versions of Doom) and i AVOIDED looking at pre-release screenshots . . . i DO like FPS (serious sam series is among my favourite).

Oh, sorry to hear your not enjoying it. Maybe its just not your type of game. Pop it over into the FS/FT forum and unload it.
Yes it is my "type" of game . . . but there are just SO MANY other games i like better - games that are INNOVATIVE, CLEVER and FUN :p

Do you really enjoy STOPPING gameplay to hear the PDA ramble ON and ON and ON; it is also kinda STUPID to have a flashlight OR a Gun - unless you LIKE clubbing Zombies. . . . and its "innovation" is to "rip off" other game ideas instead nof BUILDING on the orignal. :p

that said - just like Unreal II for last year - Doom III is "pretty" but "empty" . . . and i still am not too old to appreciate "pretty" . . . and when i am "finished" with "pretty", i will go back to a game with GAMEPLAY - Thief - Deadly Shadows - now their team knows all about "creepy" and "scary" and "atmosphere" and "story".

sell it? i have a poor friend or two that might like it when i am done ;)

i tend to think of it as a pretty - but long - $45 benchmark. :p

Like I said, if you don't like it, unload it and get some of your money back. I would buy it from you except I just picked up my own copy today. Maybe HL2 will be more your speed whenever that gets here.

I honestly can't imagine how anyone could objectively complain about D3's graphics, which are nothing short of stunning. They are not perfect, but nothing ever is, and they are, on balance, the best graphics I have ever seen in a computer game. Last night the phone rang while I was holding a grenade in the game, and so I sat and watched the perfectly formed hands and forearms, complete with hair, as they nervously clenched the grenade. Just amazing.

but what's wrong with complaining about it first?

:D

there are many many others praising it . . . i am just giving my viewpoint . . . i am not 'bitter', i am just saying it is NOT a GREAT fps game; the gameplay simply lacks (for ME!).

And sometimes, i would rather give it away then sell it. ;)

edit: HL was a FLAWED masterpiece. I think most of the levels in Xen should have been left out. ;)

ThiefII/Thief III is MY "kind" of game . . . and Serious Sam series and Max Payne(s) and NOLF(s) . . . even Unreal I (II 'reminds" me of Diii) all stand out ahead of this Doom . . .

heck i played through Unreal II . . . i'll finish Doom III . . .

Seems like this game is more for showing off the engine. Better games should be made based on it.

No offense but you like Serious Sam and find Doom3 boring? I just don't get that. SS is a prettier version of Doom 1/2 where you get a ton of baddies thrown at you, kill a few, die, respawn, repeat.

I'm a few hours into D3 and I like it quite a bit. I actually went in with low expectations because I knew it would be dark indoor levels but with the flashlight it's okay that it's dark. I spend most of my time creaping around with my back/side to a wall and the flashlight out so I can spot baddies and see places they may be hiding. Also helps to know where a safe area is so you can run to it when you're attacked.

i've been taking in-game screenshots and videos of gameplay and watching them closely. I didn't appreciate the graphics as much until now. the details are superb. I actually like looking at my videos more than playing the game. in slowmo the videos are GREEEEATT!

You forget the corny humour of the Serious Sam series . . . or the badass weapons and the sheer thrill of blowing away vast hordes of enemies . . . the incredible (for it's year) brilliantly lit OUTdoor scenes . . . AND . . .

. . . don't forget the all-important "and"

it was only $20; not $55

I do not care if this game doesn't have logical puzzles to figure out.

I do not care if this game moves along in a pretty linear fashion.

I do not care if the only point is to kill or be killed.

I do not care if this game is politically correct, or offensive to any church group.

This is the only game in years that keeps me on the edge of my seat and actually scares me. This game is like going to a horror movie when you're a kid. The graphics of all other games look cartoonish in comparison.

I play this game in the dark with my 22" FE2111SB 12" in front of my nose, and my satellite speakers around me, and I jump when things happen, and am tense while I'm creeping around in the dark.

Thank you John Carmack.

Those of you who are thinking of not buying this game because it costs $50 or some reviewer that wants hits on his site pans it, I say "Don't buy it. You probably don't have the system to run it anyway if $50 seems like too much to risk".

i am glad you like it. You seem over-impressed with the graphics . . they ARE great but everything else is "shallow" . . .

it is just 'above average' (except the great graphics) for me.
(yeah yeah yeah, i got the light low, playing on my 19" monitor with my Klipsch surround system on loud with Bass UP - thinking "this is too slow or dark" or "damn, gotta STOP the action and access the PDA to open a locker) :p

(the fact that it may be offensive to church groups is a "plus" for me) :D

For "atmosphere" and genuine "scares" you might consider Thief III - Deadly Shadows . . . graphics and lighting is a pretty good showcase for the Unreal Warfare (II) engine but the intelligent STORY and the GAMEPLAY (and the atmosphere including "chills") is TOP-notch.

Anyway you can get Doom III at Curseit City this Friday for $45 (or PM back the extra $10 "you" and i got charged at beast buy) . . . ;)

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed SS 1 & 2. For the price it was an excellent game *WITH* coop play for a change. I played through each game with my bro online. But it did get old with the die, respawn, die, respawn...

I feel like Rollo does about Doom3. You have to set the environment (lights off and sounds up - no distractions) but you really can get into the game enough that it's scary. You're alone creaping through a dark base overrun by hellspawn and your only goal is to stay alive and get back to reality.

I'm playing on Marine difficulty and so far the only time I died was in the beginning when I punched a barrel (don't do that BTW). I think they've done an excellent job of balancing the weapons/ammo with the baddies. I hate when a game is so difficult that you have to try a dozen or more times to get through an area. I like a challenge but a realistic challenge is more fun.

I dunno, maybe it's because I didn't have high expectations of Doom 3. My thinking was a game with dark indoor maps with lots of black, red, orange, brown, etc. So far it's blowing me away.

Doom 3 is a good 4 out of 5 stars game, despite it's simplicity.

I agree.
It's the atmosphere that Doom creates that makes the game.

The scares of Thief III:
1. Having to consume virtual mutton
2. Virtual syphillis from the wenches ("Gadzooks! It appears someone hid a cantaloupe in my codpiece whilst I was sleeping!")
3. Getting caught, and getting pelted with rotten vegetables in the stocks

The scares of Serious Sam:
1. Having a wheel with eyeballs explode near you
2. Being stuck in Egypt without mutton or wenches
3. Having a cartoon guy roll his head, which inexplicably is a bomb with a burning fuse, at you

I see what you mean Apoppin'- that ispretty scarey stuff!

I think that you just bought the hype and ignoring the reality.

Do tell me what the reality is!! I am interested in knowing this.. really!!

I am not ignoring the hype i fondly remember the old Doom I and Doom II and how revolutionary the graphics were. Doom III not only kicks the graphics up above anything out right now but its scaring people. Not all games have to have you reclining in a chair thinking about a puzzle. This is one of the games that is supposed to scare the living sh!t out of you.

A lot of people here keep saying that they like farcry better. But what gameplay element does farcry seem to do any better than doom3? I am about 70% through farcry and about 20% through D3 and I fail to see what makes farcry any better than doom3. farcry is a linear game its just the maps are bigger and gives you more room to move around. Also farcry has vehicles and handgliders, but I fail to see how these two elements make gameplay soooo much better. All I have been doing in farcry is running around and shooting everything I see with an occasional message over my radio about what to do next. So far in doom3 I have been running around and shooting everything I see with an occasional message over my radio about what to do next. I fail to see how this makes farcry so much better. In my opinion they are both equally fun.

There is NO way to explain it . . . but there are differences that account for our individuality and personal tastes.

That's why there is variety. ;)

I really tried (hard) to like Doom III; i set my 19" monitor just right, my favorite gaming chair, my Klipsch surround system Up with Bass loud . . . my 9800Xt is certainly fast enough . . .
. . . NO distractions (late at night) and . . .

BLAaa . . . :p

i can't get "into" it

but i will drop out of this pointless discussion and return to playing it . . . now!

there weren't any scares with Serious Sam; it was just mindless fun and carnage. :)

And i see you don't know anything about the Thief series. Zero. Zilch. Nada. ;)

. . . and i can forgive you for your ignorance about Thief . . . but not for continuing this pointless discussion with me. :p

Since we are are now discussing "personal taste" - i see no evidence from any of your posts that it is more 'developed' or refined than mine - we can agree to disagree about a game that we both own . . .
. . . afterall, there are no benchs to backup either of our Doom personal opinions except OTHER opinions.

BTW, did you FINISH the game already? WHY aren't you playing it now?
(j/k'ing) :D

i am off to do so . . . now.

Aloha (and enjoy your doom)
