Edit from want to trade to Poor Doom 3 Reviews

I just read a thread on the software forum on Doom 3: Not Good?

Basically they go into the graphics are good but the game play is mediocre? I will still buy the game to play it and see how it is after I finish far cry. I notice that the X800 XT is faster in far cry (a game I really like and can't wait to see mods for) and is supposed to be faster in the upcoming HL2. I am more into games like far cry, hopefully HL2, and Rome Total War.

Currently I have an EVGA 6800 GT and will step up in October to 6800 Ultra or whatever fastest card they have at that time.

I could keep my new Ultra wrapped in plastic if someone would like to trade for a retail X800 XT (preferably Power Color, free HL2 coupon still and two other cool games :)) I was going to buy this card but I couldn't wait as my old system died and I had to build early.

Thanks.

FYI.... Another bad review for Doom: Xbit

Dooming Conclusion
So, Doom III is finally here. It makes positive impression, but those, who played the original Doom 10 years ago may just be too old for this kind of action, while the guys and gals who spent months played Counter Strike and FarCry pretty recently may just find the new Doom a little bit monotonous? Frankly speaking, the gameplay is pretty primitive: linear passing-through and very trivial solutions along with the amount of killings is definitely not something that today?s games deliver. Doom III would look good in 2001, 2002. But not in 2004.

I guess I'll wait for the demo. This just confirms my suspicion that this is essentially a graphically-enhanced Quake, just like Quake was a graphically-enhanced Doom, or a Doom an enhanced Wolfenstein 3D. id has essentially made the same game over and over.

I agree. Doom was awesome when it first came out. It sounds like (from the review) that it hasn't added much more than some good graphics (same game play). I am more into the realism of a FPS and one where you have to play smart and not just run and gun.

If I want run and gun I like a multiplayer friendly game like the battlefield series.

Does anyone else get a headache from playing Doom 3? At first I thought it was from my subwoofer, so I turned that down, but I still get a headache. This doesn't happen to me with any other game and I don't even get a headache from listening to my music loud and with the sub level up high.

Well, given that this was one of the most anticipated games ever, and given that Doom 1 practically invented FPS (I realize it didn't), there was no way this game was going to live up to expectations and change people's lives.

It's a good game, if somewhat straightforward.

Doom's innovations were really the shareware concept, the giving away of the source code (allowing custom wads and mods), multiplayer, and the graphics. Its gameplay wasn't really revolutionary. That would be System Shock from '94, which incorporated action, adventure, and roleplay elements, which really set the precedent for games like Deus Ex, Jedi Knight, and others.

YES!! It must be the constant light flashing and such. I have really good vision but today my head is killing me and my eyes are burning after just 2 hours of off and on play, haha. Looks like I am not the only one. :)

that isn't bad.... Quake was the best game of it's genre that I'd ever played - and I still run it as Tenebrae Quake. I remember when it came out how at first I wanted so badly to have a rig that would play it (had a 386 at that time) and then, when I finally got an amd k5 processor that would run it, how blown away I was when I added the 8 meg 3dfx Voodoo 1 card.

I'm personally getting sick of all the military games and would prefer a bit of fantasy for a change.

funny; i think Far Cry is a better game in so many ways, but i don't particulairy *like* Far Cry. i think what i am enjoying about Doom so far is that it's quite scary at times; the graphics are good, but i find the success is more in the atmosphere they've created. Doom 3 is a good 4 out of 5 stars game, despite it's simplicity.

i think Stalker and HL2 are going to deliver the whole package.

Why dont people play the damn game instead of posting about other peoples opinions.

Think for yourself... yeah X-bit and reviews should give us a good idea however make your own opinions.

I am really enjoying doom3, I love the atmosphere in the game, when u play at night with the lights off its scary as hell. Yesterday at a lan party, we turned off the lights and let one of our friends (Ed) play doom 3. Right when a zombie came down the stairs, I sneaked behind Ed and shook him. He got so freaked out that he jumped in his seat. It was the funniest thing I ever saw

For those who do not currently own the game but thinking about getting it, I agree. I almost never listen to movie critics mainly because they are not me and I am not them. I like what I like and dislike what I dislike. Nobody else can ever tell me otherwise. Make your own judgements as GamingPhreek suggested. Thats what you were given your own brain for. :)

For me... still playing Far Cry (just completing steam level). I got the game for free with my GT card and it is an awesome game :) I only game for about an hour in the evenings so I can spend most of my time with my wife :p

I will play Doom 3 (after I'm done with Far Cry, at least a couple of runs and hopefully squeezed in before RTW comes out) I read reviews or I would end up spending all of my free time gaming to figure out what I do and don't like. I don't have the luxury of time and tons of money to spend on a game that may or may not suck?

The games I had lined up to play (after building my new system recently):

Far Cry (enjoying it)
Doom 3 (sounds like it may not be my type of game, especially with limited multiplayer.. I like battlefield type multiplayer)
HL2 (hopefully in September)
Rome Total War (must have game of the year)
Stalker (not until 2005)

Anyway... I may be selling or trading my Ultra in the future unless the drivers really boost it in directX shader gaming (HL2, Stalker, Far Cry)

OK, i am over 2 hours into the game and it is BORING. :p

Boring . .. boring . . . boring.

Scary? CreepY? NAW . . . more like "gross". :p

For "creepy AND scary" - i.e. "real atmosphere" (NOT "superb" graphics + "boring" gameplay) - TRY Thief - Deadly Shadows . . . ;)

and i had ZERO expectations (i never played the earlier versions of Doom) and i AVOIDED looking at pre-release screenshots . . . i DO like FPS (serious sam series is among my favourite).

It was called DWANGO, I think.

Doom 3 isn't as fun as playing Doom 2 with DoomGL. I can play Doom 2 for hours and hours, but Doom 3 is a game where you just have to stop. The first two Doom games were about being swarmed by monsters, and using mobility to survive. Doom 3 is about fighting 1 monster at a time, moving slow as a penguine, and using crappy guns that suck. The shotgun in Doom 1 and 2 was powerful. The shotgun in Doom 3 is pure garbage; it takes 3 shots to kill a former human.

Doom 3 is ok, but it can't compare to Doom 2 with DoomGL or Quake with FuhQuake.

Oh, sorry to hear your not enjoying it. Maybe its just not your type of game. Pop it over into the FS/FT forum and unload it.

Yes it is my "type" of game . . . but there are just SO MANY other games i like better - games that are INNOVATIVE, CLEVER and FUN :p

Do you really enjoy STOPPING gameplay to hear the PDA ramble ON and ON and ON; it is also kinda STUPID to have a flashlight OR a Gun - unless you LIKE clubbing Zombies. . . . and its "innovation" is to "rip off" other game ideas instead nof BUILDING on the orignal. :p

that said - just like Unreal II for last year - Doom III is "pretty" but "empty" . . . and i still am not too old to appreciate "pretty" . . . and when i am "finished" with "pretty", i will go back to a game with GAMEPLAY - Thief - Deadly Shadows - now their team knows all about "creepy" and "scary" and "atmosphere" and "story".

sell it? i have a poor friend or two that might like it when i am done ;)

i tend to think of it as a pretty - but long - $45 benchmark. :p

I think D3 is pretty brilliant, actually, and IMO the negativism toward it is mainly a function of peoples' very high expectations.

The gameplay is admittedly fairly classic FPS, but IMO the atmosphere is unparalleled in its authenticity, the monsters are genuinely creepy, and the graphics have no real peer. Far Cry was certainly impressive, and its outdoor environments were something altogether different from D3's claustrophobic levels, but IMO its cartoonishness made it a lot less immersive than D3.

Amazingly for an id game, D3 actually has a very coherent plot (at least to the point I have reached) and fantastic production values and voice acting (it's almost certainly the best FPS ever developed in these aspects). Although the plot appears to have been largely cribbed from the original Doom, and HL, I buy it and like it.

The PDA concept is one I can understand people taking exception to, but I like it fine. This is the first time I remember taking notes during a game since Myst, and I sure never thought I'd be doing it for an id title, but the rewards make it worthwhile.

I'm not crazy about the flashlight/gun switching - if they had tactical lights in the 20th century, surely they'd have them in the 22nd! - but I get it as a gameplay device, and as long as you have the flashlight set to an easily-accessed key (I use Mouse3), it works fine and it's fun shooting blindly into the dark at a recently-flashed target.

I also like the difficulty level, though it is perhaps a touch easy on the middle, "Marine" setting. Even at that difficulty I find it easier than FC on "Easy," which I honestly am OK with. Frankly I think a lot of developers have been resorting to ridiculous levels of difficulty as a substitute for adequate length. I find D3 fun and appropriately challenging for the most part.

I tried multiplayer for a little while, and it seems to me the levels are too large for the default 4-player max. I think it's got potential, and we'll see how it develops with new patches, point release, etc.

So far I'd give the game at least a 90% - we'll see how I feel after completing it.

This game is great. I personally hate all the Quakes but so far I love Doom 3. The graphics are great but what really makes the game for me is the atmosphere. I also love the fact that the game is not frustrating. I've seen some valid complaints about the flashlight /gun situations. I personally believe that if you have tape, you can attach the light to at least one of your guns. Furthermore, you should be able to hold both the light and the handgun at the same time. Other than that the game is great. Is not as straight forward as people make it see. It actually has a very slow pace without skimping on the action. The enemies have a surprisingly good AI for a bunch of zombies. Also I've only died once in the game and that was because I was surprised by those damn spiders. While I've seen some gripes about monsters sneaking up on you, let me tell you that it is not a big deal since they don't dish out that much damage. This game is a technological masterpiece, with above avarage gameplay, enhanced by the best atmosphere of any game I've ever played, and a surprisingly coherent plot. I will hold off on praising the game any further until I beat it. SO far I like it much better than Far Cry.

Agree. Maybe it's because I was 14 or 15 back in the Doom 1 and 2 days and am 24 now, but D3 just isn't as much fun. :(

For the record, Doom 1 and 2 both had only IPX/SPX support for up to four players (as did Heretic). You could play this online with services like Kali, or apps like DWANGO, etc.. I used to DM with D2 online via Kali all the time, it was fun.

The shotgun in Doom 1 and 2 wasn't powerful at all, it would take two or more shots to mow down an imp unless at point blank. The double barrelled shotgun was quite powerful though.

From all the gameplay comments I've seen about the game, it's not the traditional Doom game, but people are getting frustrated by this expecting it to be. It sounds to me much more along the lines of Hitman or Splinter Cell than anything else: a game where you skulk around attempting to perform a mission (in this case survive).

I won't be picking it up like I had planned because of the system requirements stating it needs 2000/XP, and I'm not upgrading just for Doom, but I anticipate upgrading this fall for other reasons, so I may pick it up then.
