Does Fry's Ship? If you are willing to wait and send it via a slow deliver service $29.99 + shipping could be a pretty good deal too.

Are all of the USB ports on this mobo USB 2.0 or just a few of them? If so, which ones and how many? I'm thinking about upgrading a regular K7S5A board to the Pro just for USB 2.0. It's about as cheap as buying a USB 2.0 card or a Firewire card. Maybe less if I sell off my original board.

Thanks!

Another post recommending caution regarding this board. I bought one of the combo deals from Fry's a few months back and have had problems with the board not remembering the CMOS settings. About once a week (and everytime the power is disconnected), the bios looses it's settings. Changed the battery but this didn't help.

Other than this, the board is fine.

For the lost CMOS problem, check out the following K7S5A forum:

K7S5A motherboard forum

And here's a great K7S5A "Problem Fix Guide":

K7S5A and M830LR Problem Fix Guide

I built my first PC using a K7S5A a couple of years ago. It has worked great from day one.

But many experienced builders *have* had problems with this board.

I have no idea whether or not the problem rate is better or worse than other boards. The shear number of complaints might just be a fallout of the huge number of these boards sold.

But you might want to consider a local purchase in case you do run into a problem. That will make an exchange easier than shipping it back to Newegg. (But, if an online purchase is your best option, you can't go wrong with Newegg. )

Are there any problems fitting larger heatsinks on this motherboard? I was able to get a Alpha PAL 8045 on the old K7S5A no problem, but I don't know if they changed the location of the capacitors to cause any problems with larger heatsinks.

Got mine, now I just need a compatible proc, HD, ram, psu, and a case to jam it all into and I'll have yet another computer ;-)

Out of the 20 that I built I had several problems:
1. Corrupted Bios (2) - Never had this problem on any board except this one and some will RMA this board because of this.
2. DOA - One DOA. Did not pass GO, did not collect $200
3. Will not boot - One bad board that didn't recognize peripherals

All from Fry's Industry branch where many got several bad batches of this board giving it a bad name. Easy build, lowest quality board I ever made a system for, will make you nuts if you get a bad one - RMA is no fun and a few $$$ more gets you an ASUS A-bit Gigabyte etc. Peace of mind when you are building is worth an addition few $$'s. Then again the price including the CPU at Fry's is remarkable.

I just got one, set it up and its dead. CMOS battery low, keyboard error.
I am staying away from ECS from now on. This is the 2 one to die on me.

I just set my board up I got from Newegg for $36, and it works like a charm. I built 5 systems using this board and I had only one complaint. Sometimes the system does not recognize the Hard drive after a cold boot. I had to remove the ide cable and re-insert it. It works, but this happens once a week.

The CMOS battery low message occurred when I first booted my K7S5A pro. I went into BIOS and it hasn't occurred since.

I just looked through my records, and my company has built 135 computers out of the K7S5A v1.0 (from January 2002) through now, based on the K7S5A v2.0 Pro. We always use the BIOS the board comes with unless a newer one if avalible.

Guess what? 6 have come back, and 4 of them were for Windows reinstalls because they had too much crap. The other two: Maxtor HD failure and a CDRW drive (Lite-On) tray eject problem.

Seems these boards are ok for <$40, and they take both types of RAM.

It's not just the sheer volumes, some of these boards are a real PITA.
There there's that website ECS sponsors, where they ban you if you don't agree that it *must* be your memory or power supply or (anything but the motherboard) that's to blame, even after you recount 12X as much work trying to get it going.

If you get one that works, congrats, you saved some dough... otherwise the hassles aren't worth the savings.

Did they ever fix that issue where it wouldn't run stable with two PC133 DIMMs?
Granted it's better to use DDR, but if two PC133 won't work right they should've left that 2nd slot off the board.

What kind of capacitors are these using around the mosfets? I hope none of those !@#$#$% GSC or Luxons !!!!!!!

On the plus side, it does boot from my thumbdrive, if/when it decides to boot. :|

The battery message always happens. Whats it say about the keyboard?

I can run 2 sticks of pc133 or ddr with no problems at all.

i think u're talking about the non-pro version. the older versions had these problems. once pro v5.0 came out, all these problems have been fixed. i have yet to hear anyone bash about the pro version.

weepul, you may be right, i may have the non-Pro... haven't fiddled with it recently, thank goodness. If they really fixed the problems then it's a good deal, but still from my perspective... if they want to replace a board and pay for all that wasted time, then I feel like I broke even, but otherwise...

I had that happen once so far. When powered off the PC, the next time it started it was back to normal. Of course I had already reset the BIOS attempting to fix it, but that didn't seem to help.

2000+ XP chip here.

Did you set the bus the 133 (default is 100)?
