EB's return/exchange policy?

I know that about one year ago, Electronics Boutique changed their return policy to "absolutely no returns/exchanges on open games". However, I went and returned a game today, Syberia. It was unopened, yes, but the person didn't ask for a reason like they used to. On the receipt it said the reason was "did not like". They shouldn't even have that reason in their computers anymore if no returns of opened games are allowed, should they? Also on the receipts it says "Returns & exchange of new & pre-owned merchandise will be accepted within 14 days of purchase. Some exceptions apply." So is their great return policy back or is that just wishful thinking?

My store USED to be super cool about returns, then they got really stupid and the customer service went down the tubes. It DOES seem that they are starting to turn around though... both of my friends got some games that simply just wouldn't play in there xbox's or would randomly freeze and they gave them cash back instead of giving them a hard time. I would say YMMV, but they have been improving slowly.

Just because the reason is present in the computer doesn't mean we're allowed/supposed to do it. Perfect example is cash on trade-ins. Nothing in the computer bars me from giving you 100% trade-in value in cash, but I'd be fired the next day if I did.

At my store, it's employee's discretion. Hate to say it, but I decide almost immediately if I'm going to let you exchange it or not. A huge part of that is whether you're upfrom ("Hey, I just cannot stand this game. It's too boring, etc.") or whether you try to scheme your way around ("Well, it locks up in my Xbox but I don't really want another disc...").

As far as the Returns and exchanges line, read the back of the receipt. The exclusions are video game software and hardware and DVDs.

Yea, I had the same situation, except I got stuck with the fvcken game. Fvcken EB. I didn't even want cash. I was gonna trade it in with some cash for another console. Fvcken bastards.

EDIT: TerryMathews, so because the game freezes on their box, you won't give them the return? How do you know the return would work at all? Maybe the guy behind the counter was an ass like you who didn't know I tried 3 additional copies on my box and it wouldn't read and didn't feel like driving home and then driving back to the store with nothing to show for my trouble and gas?

I will always exchange a game for another copy of the same title; that is our company's policy. Whether I will bend it to allow exchanges to different titles is made on a case-by-case basis.

And as far as your additional copies problem, you should have your Xbox checked out...

So what are your personal guidelines on allowing exchanges of different titles? You could bury yourself in a hole if you don't be careful about that.

I already know its my xbox. The drive (thompson) just hates Ninja Gaiden for some reason but insofar has not frozen in another game. I'm not about to go and spend another 70 bucks just to play Gaiden, and I expected EB to understand, since I spent 1400 there already (xbox at 300, 4 extra remotes and the dvd playback, audio/video cables, and tons of games) and it should be obvious I wasn't just trying to scam them, beating the game and returning it. I explained it all to them and was willing to bring it in, but the fvck behind the counter wouldn't do it, along with the manager. Heck, I was even going to spend more money there. They've already lost my business forever.

Give it time... It will stop playing other things. I can personally verify that a Thompson drive in working condition will have no trouble playing Ninja Gaiden, as it's what is in my 1.0 Xbox.

As we've already been over in this thread, I probably would have let you exchange it one time for a different game of the same value if you were upfront about it. That being said, that manager's position is to the letter in line with corporate policy so I can't falut him for his position. If you really want to voice your opinion, write into EB Corporate. Yelling at someone at the store level and vowing never to shop there again is going to change nothing.

And if your criteria on a place to shop at is whether or not they will let you exchange a game, you're going to have a lot of trouble finding places to shop. EB's return policy is in line with GameStop's and all of the other major retailers (Wal*Mart, Meijer, Target).

Yes, I know in time it'll start stop playing other games, but it still plays other games now, and look, you can grab a used xbox for 130 right now. By the time my drive fails, I can probably just buy a new box. Also, my criteria wasn't to let me exchange the game. I never would have purchased from there in the first place if it wasn't for that policy though. I would have gotten from a local store just to support the smaller business. I've already written to EB Corporate saying all this and all I got was a sorry for the inconvenience and they're sorry, but its corporate policy bull.

That manager made a horrible move, since they're located in Davis, a small college town that won't even allow a walmart, target, or any kind of large store within city limits and there is a Gamestop 2 minutes away. I was ready to plop down another couple hudnred to grab a PS2, remotes, and games on the spot, instead I spent my money at Gamestop and spread horror stories about them on the internet, and through campus.

They do, but the manager there let me trade in a Ninja Gaiden for 50 bucks store credit to spend on my PS2.

Considering it was the owner, I'd say yes. I walked in bitching about EB and he told me he heard about the news and such and was ashamed stores weren't allowing returns for games that wouldn't play. Thats the kind of customer service I like, and so I spent lots of money there.

EDIT: Yes, it was the owner, I guess I typed manager in the last reply. I should have payed more attention to what I typed.

I wasn't aware that there were any franchise GameStop stores...

I may be wrong. When I asked if he was a manager, he said "I own this place," but I guess he may have been joking.

EDIT: I'm just going to let this fall. I hate EB, you don't, and I don't think its going to change with us discussing anything.

As has been said a million times before, it's really a shame EB had to change their policy. It's why I havn't bought anything there in about a year, because I can just as easily buy something somewhere else.

If you think I'm not sympathetic, you're mistaken. It's unfortunate, but for every honest person there's ten who are dishonest. It's not possible to stay profitable and run a free video game rental. Which is what we were doing prior to the change in our return policy.

i was amazed when I bought a cd from Hastings, returned it opened the same day and told them it was a gift and i bought the wrong one, they let me exchange it for a different album.. i went back the next day with the second cd (also opened) and they gave me store credit on the return. ! this was well into the mp3 ripping/cd copying days, pre-napster i think though
this was the same hastings that I stole Magic The Gathering cards from a few times. I've never even played the game, but i sold them to my geek friends in junior high. i just grabbed a pack or two and stuffed them in my underwear.
then one time, I set off the alarms you walk through as you leave !
I sweating nervous.. clerk had me step thru again, it set it off. I removed my necklace and emptied my coins and went through again, it went off ! finally I removed my glasses, and walked thru quickly and WOW 3rd times a charm, it didn't go off. i grabbed my sh*t and left. scared me straight so to speak, haven't shoplifed since
