Eating fingernails: Is it unhealthy?

Assuming your fingernails are clean, is it healthy to eat your fingernail fragments as you bite them off? They are made of calcium, correct? I would think that it might be bad for the appendix.

I doubt it'll harm you even if the nails have normal dirt. The GI tract is a tough cookie. For the nails though, I suppose if you chew off too much, you might cause an injury and infection to your fingertips?

Hey--aren't fingernails similar to horns in animals? Some people eat horn for alleged aphrodisiac benefits, so maybe eating your fingernails would make you "horny."
