Easy to hide DSL from parents?

Just one filter is needed and that one will filter all the phones, can usually be install in the gray box on the side of the house or in the basement where the wires usually come in. Then run a unfilter wire to the modem.

Since your dad is already paying 21.95 a month why don't you split the cost. It will be $25 each or let him pay 21.95 and you pay $28...seems fair.

well they will insall a a box outside ur house, ur dad might notice that....and the ppl that come in your house to insall the dsl, unless your doing self install...

They either install one external filter (which would require a tech to come install it costing you installation fees) or you have to install individual filters on all the phones. Either of which would be noticeable. The individual filters on the phones actually may not be too bad, as most phone lines run behind furniture in my house, and the filter is a small little box that just runs inline. However if there is a wall mounted phone (like in the kitchen), that filter is shaped differently (so you can still wall mount the phone). That one is fairly noticeable.

Do you pay for a 2nd phone line? you can drop that when you get DSL since you wont be on it for the net anymore.
that almost makes up for the DSL cost alone

If you have credit and can afford a $200 dollar per month bill it is safe to say that you make a fair wage, especially if you also have your own car.

It's time to cut the cord and either tell your parents that you are signing up and paying for it or move out and start doing things on your own.

I spend a bit more on things than my parents ever would, they give me lip about it now and then. Oh well, it's not their money. It's funny though, they never seem to have a problem with coming over and watching a movie in my home theater!?!

<< its not a matter of if your dad finds out....its a matter of when. >>

Too true, I would try to split the cost with them, if they were anything like my parents the ability to make calls while I am online was invaluable

just curious - who is yo daddy, and what does he do?

seriously though, can't you run dsl to his comp - if he has his own comp- along with yours, and then when he sees how fast it is, along with having the phone line free, maybe he'll have a change of heart?

Earthlink uses linesharing DSL now so there is no tech visit, they do all the connecting at the CO. They will ship out a modem kit though which could be a problem. It contains the filters and modem.

Good point. But let me clarify some things:

My dad sees no use for the internet, much less paying 50 bucks a month for it
He does not use a computer at all
He does not know what a modem, dsl, broadband, etc. is

The fact of the matter is that he would see it as an unecessary expense, so splitting the cost isnt any better, whether its my money or his money.

Ive pretty much outgrown that phase. I think...

Nobody outgrows porn! Come on!

Get your own line, then do whatever the hell you please with it. I'm 19, & I've had my own phone line for the last few years. I wouldn't have it any other way. It is SO nice to be able to tell people they can call you any time, day or night. It's also nice not to have to worry about other people needing the phone, listening to your conversations via another extension, etc.

If you only have one phone line just tell him a twist of the truth. The little boxes allow me to use the internet faster and allow me to use the phone while I browse the internet.

thats brilliant. just tell him you bought them at radio shack.

but this is a pretty sad situation all 'round. Even my best friend who's girlfriend keeps him so whipped its not even funny isn't as trapped as you seem to be. You have plenty of money my good friend. Either move out or learn to deal with your folks. I imagine that almost everyone else here over 18 has had to do it, and it's about time you grow up and stop fearing your old man.

If this is what you're so afraid of:

"I still have a nasty scar from when I thought that."

just try and keep in mind the laws in our country concerning assault. You should have nothing to fear by telling your father how you wish to spend your own money. if you do, i strongly suggest you seek counselling.

And, of course, good luck getting broadband!

Besides being dishonest to your parents, DSL companies cannot install DSL service, altering the existing phone service, without permission of the primary person on the residential phone account. In this case, your Dad. In other words, you'd either have to forge his signature (bad idea) or get his permission.

Just ask. If they say no, it's a bummer but that's life... If they say yes, then you've got broadband and you didn't have to lie about it.

Not that I know anything about DSL(me cable), but couldn't the filter be installed before the lines branch out, like wherever your terminal box is?
