I found this mod over at xtremesystemsforums. I figured what the heck and gave it a try. This will get you the coolest temps on air cooling on the 7800gtx that I have found. My idle temps went from 44 to 38c and my load temps went from 62 to 48c. I should also add that I was able to overclock my BFG 7800 GTX to 499/1420 and mantain idle temps of 39 and 51 under a full load. This is done at stock voltage of 1.449. I will be doing a volt mod later this week to see what I can get. To do this mod All you have to do is remove the 6 screws in the plastic heatsink cover and remove the cover. Then all you have to do is take a 80mm fan and zip tie it to the heatsink. I used 1/2" plastic spacer to space the fan off the heatsink to aid in cooling. Thats it. Very easy mod with very good results. Here are the pics of how mine came out

Man those clocks are good. What kinda fan is that 80mm out of curiosity? Nice, simple, cheap mod...I like that ;)

its a sunon. i will get the model off of it tommorow. I'm hoping to get 520-550 with the volt mod i'm going to do. But 499 ain't to bad. I should add that it has no artifacts on 3dmarko5 at 499/1420 and i get a score of 8828 with the cpu at 2600mhz. I want to get above 9000 on air after the volt mod. fingers crossed!

Hey Guys,

I just modded my 7800GTX following this thread, below is a link to a pic to show how it finished up, i cut the cover plate to keep the original fan working like it was and asthetics are better too. i then used a quiet TT fan (glows red :D) and voila! Check it out below.

I am happy that the mod has still kept my case silent as I hate my friends vacuum cleaner full of dick smith electronics fans lol.

Mine is blowing on to the card which seems to be the way to go as it seems to significantly drop the temps, however i haven't tried it the other way.

I am using a fan controller too so that when in windows and games i dont hear the pc and then i boost the fan speed up so that the benchmarks can go on :D

I hope I am not being to naive, but this kind of "mod" does void the warranty, right?

Heh,
I guess they could argue the fact if you told them, otherwise you could remove the 80mm fan and re-attach the cover to make it stock again, ultimatley if you modify anything it will generally be void of warranty, but in saying that we dont go about spending our hard earned dollars to be told what we can do and what we can't do.

If you use common sense and research what your doing you shouldn't have an issue. as long as you dont go oc'ing up the wazoo.

If you have space below the card, why not try building a shroud and raising the fan off the heatsink by about 0.5-1"? You should see slightly lower temps and less noise.

I guess It depends on your moral level or opinion on who determines the warranty is vioded.

For example if you truly believe that you voided your warranty, and you sent it in anyway or lied when asked if you did it then then it would go back to the Moral level.

Other people believe that it is not up to them to decide if their warranty has been vioded by the manufacturers. They need to be able to look at it and say you vioded the warranty. Part of it is when getting an RMA is wether if they ask about it in the first place. Its not your fault if they don't ask you for enough information to figure out if your warranty is vioded or not.

I would say there is a good chance your warranty would be vioded and while I haven't personally ever RMAed something even slightly questionable (because except for DOAs I really haven't ran into problems) I would probably have to side with option A. For the most part they are going to assess wether your warranty is good or not anyways and as a former tech at a service bench have seen a large amount of products you would think is still covered be voided for obscure reasons, so you never ever truly know if your product is covered unless you try.

nice work camotec. i thought about cutting the top plate and decieded against it. what kind of temps are you getting at load and idle and what clocks.

So you get no artifacts, low temperatures, and 100% stability.

Makes me wonder what's possible with a 120mm Delta 200cfm fan :p

yep, runnin at 495/1410 24/7 with no artifacts and complelty stable. i don't like runnin at the ragged edge 24/7 for obvious reasons. hopefully with the volt mod(which the parts won't be here till the 19th eerrrrrrr) i will be able to bump the voltage to 1.500 from 1.449 at full 3d load and be able to get 525 plus stable. i did notice that with the card set to 499/1420 after playing need for speed underground at 1600x1200 for 1 hour the max temp got up to 53c. that was with the fan at 1/2 speed. i am looking for the most cfm and lowest db 80mm fan on the market. any suggestions?

No question about it>> http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/sidewindercomputers/pa80hisp.html
If you want more, the ultra high speed could be what you want, but its rated @ 39dba.
Cooling your case temp will do more for you than a higher cfm gpu fan.

Cronic:

my clocks are set to 496/1260 (hardly optimised)
IDLE Temp : sits on 34C (33C when i turn my case 120mm on full)
LOAD Temp: sits on 53C (51C when i turn my case 120mm on full)

Standard Temps are much nicer though IDLE: 34C LOAD: 46C

Cronic: I would source another faceplate if you want to keep your current one intact or trace out that section of the cover plate onto thick card or out of ice scream :) container plastic cause the nvidia fan wont work well if there is no housing around it cause its the centrifugal type of fan. (like a car turbo in a way)

Fresh Daemon:
I will check that out man i guess I could raise it up a bit by putting in spacers, will have to find some, Cronic what ones did you use?

Cheers

i used some plastic spacer from a plasma tv wall mount bracket. they are just round plastic spacers, and used small zip ties to attach the fan and the spacers to the heatsink. i agree that the shroud would help the smaller fan, but i'm not sure with the 80mm right beside of it that the small one is doing anything at all. i am going to make a new shroud out of plexiglass and try it out and see if that makes a difference. i will probably work on that tonight. i really want to get the most efficient air cooling i can. i do not want to deal with watercooling, and i have been there done that with phase change. i came to realize that air cooling is the way to go for me. thanks for the comments guys.

Nice one Cronic,

oh BTW just ran 3dmark05 w/ cpu@2.6ghz and 7800 @ 525/1350 to get a score of 8963
I doubt i will run that speed all the time though but seemed to work fine without giving errors etc.

I posted my version of the mod on an Australian Overclockers Forum and they thought I was a fool for voiding my warranty and such lol. Even though they themselves void their warranty for overclocking anyways.

Cheers
