I can't believe the olympics has soccer, basketball, and baseball, but no football.

Wtf? Who plays football seriously outside of North America? The US would win gold for all eternity.

Two sports that should be in the Olympics are rugby and cricket.

There might be only like 20 people doing modern pentathalon, but I wouldn't like my chances in it regardless. I'm pretty sure, for example, 200m freestyle swimming times are in the 1:10 or so times. Still pretty badass. I'd have to assume the 3k times are equally impressive, and training for those things and then also practicing shooting some air pistol? Forget about it.

I'd say my best chances might be with fencing. I don't care what people say about "right of way" or whatever, both people shout, stab each other, and the judges flip a coin to decide who got the point.

I'm pretty sure they won't be in the 1:10 range since Phelps set the WR at about 1:43 😉

Whoops. 😱

I meant 2:10, typo.

Badminton

The shuttle moves so slowly that even a fat dude with good reflexes could be competitive in it....sort of like bowling "athletes".

It's obviously swimming if that one dude can win 8 gold medals at one olympics. They need to up the difficulty there.

Yeah, 200mph is pretty slow.

Here's a little factoid I found on the NBC Olympic website:

In 1908 Lieutenant Wyndham Halswelle ran around the track alone and became the only track and field athlete ever to win an Olympic gold medal unchallenged

So...Not sure if it's possible, but look up any events that are offered and have no competitors, and sign up for that event.

Winter Olympic sport...

what's that sport where they push this disc/puck on ice...and a bunch of guys start using a broom to clear the ice?

that looks easy...i remember it was mocked by the Simpsons...forgot which episode...

Maybe b/c only a couple of countries play it.

http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/8504326/site/21683474/ no softball/baseball for 2012 🙁 bastards 🙁

Yea that sucks. Yet events like trampoline are here to stay?

Its only the US an CUba that are decent at baseball. Hence why they are dropping it. Nobody else can form a team to compete. Speaking of which. when's the next US men's Basketball game?

Japan, Taiwan, and the Domincan republic could all field world class teams. Mexico, Canada, and some other Asain countries could also field competetive teams.

Could? Why don't they?

So far South Korea is winning in olympic baseball, has better score (as in no losses) than Japan, Cuba and USA

Yea they beat the US the first day, I don't think competitiveness is the issue.

Maybe we should just go back to non-professional athletes in all sports.

I seriously watched some guys walk for a medal...

The winning time was 20K in 80 minutes. Not terribly difficult to run that fast, but walking that fast is insane.
Yeah. But it's still walking.

No, that's "a" reason but not the main reason. The main reason, from the IOC chairman himself, is that Olympic sports are supposed to represent the best of the best, and baseball in the Olympics is the dregs. Other countries can field competitive teams against the US, sure, but the main problem is that 95% of the talent in baseball is currently playing in MLB.

Frankly I don't see why it'd be such a big deal to just suspend the damn season for 2 weeks. I guess baseball is too busy destroying itself to bother.

Agreed.
We need to put sharks in the water.
That would make it more difficult and also improve interest in the Olympics.
I know I would watch more !

Funny that a lot of you say shooting because India just won its first individual gold in it and the guy is now a national hero being constantly paraded on television (and within a day he was already in a Samsung ad there).

Well he was pretty well off since his dad was some agriculture or manufacturing mogul. When he decided to go into shooting, his dad built him his own indoor shooting range so he could practice. Then, after winning gold, his dad bought him his own hotel.
