Earthquake near Napa, did you feel it?

Was in SF. Sleeping on a couch but there was noisy people in the house. I probably felt it but just figured people were moving around the house.

6.0 was biggest in 25 years which is news.

Why moved out of Politics and News?

Dunno, can't trust these mods sometimes. :\
Because Off Topic is the de facto standard social subforum and there are far more forumers in Off Topic than P&N which is actually basically just to keep OT free from political bullshit and fighting.

Yeah, I don't care, OT has more participants so WTH.

The state legislature in unanimous vote last year (Reps and Dems) approved the building of an early warning system such as they have in place in China, Mexico (!) and Japan. Scientists in Berkeley this morning had a 10 second warning that the shocks were going to start, they and ~150 agencies, including B.A.R.T. Of course, the further you were from the epicenter, the more warning you got.

In their infinite wisdom the legislature failed to give the measure the $80 million necessary to furnish the system to the public, which would include cell phone warnings and other media, which would give the many millions of CA inhabitants the opportunity to brace themselves, jump under tables, curb their cars, etc. or at least slow them down, doctors to pull back their scalpels, etc. etc. etc. This little quake today did an estimated $1 billion dollars damage. That's a drop in the bucket (literally, virtually) compared to what will happen if a 7.0 earthquake (i.e. 45 times the energy) hits on the Hayward fault in the very populous and built up portions, and they say there's a 33% chance of that happening within the next 15 years.

Come on guys, pony up the dough. We need that early warning system.

When I lived in California my dad gave me a roll of encephalogram paper. I made my self a rudimentary Richter scale by hanging a pen from the middle of a plant stand and on top of the paper. The quake would cause the pen to move around and I would say, "5.4 mom!" LOL!

I was awake & couldn't help but feel it, since the house felt like it was rattling. I knew it had to be at least a 6.0.

About 8 hours before it hit I was wondering when California was going to have another big earthquake. When I looked at the news on Sunday my question got answered.

That is spooky. I was wondering the same thing. I wrote it off though because I don't think a 6.0 is considered big. But what do I know, I only felt the one on the east coast after it woke me up.

so..how come there was no looting in Napa?? All the power was off. No lights..or alarms. How come all the liquor and electronic stores didn't get looted like in St.Louis??

It looked pretty visible to me from what they showed on the news. Buildings collapsed, store shelves thrown all over, fires etc. Looks like they got quite the cleanup to do.

Yes, in Napa, but in towns further out that felt shaking in buildings? Did it cause any cracks in the foundations or structural damage to buildings that's not visible from outside?

No reports that I have seen of serious issues outside of Napa. Various shuttle services did shut down yesterday, in places very far away from Napa for safety reasons, but no other reports of injury or structural problems as far as I know.

I felt it in San Francisco.

It's was an interesting one. At first it just light shaking. Then the shaking started getting stronger and stronger. I was bracing myself because I thought it was going to be a big one and there will be carnage. But then it suddenly stopped.

Woke me up at 3:20 in Mt. View when it happened. Made sure nothing fell since I have tons of boxes piled up while I get ready to move. Checked Twitter for a bit, went back to sleep.
