Here in Berkeley, it was fairly gentle but lasted a long time, maybe 15 seconds. I figured it for over 6 and a ways away. 3:20AM. I woke up immediately thinking "is this the big one?" Earthquakes start small as a general rule and can escalate into something humongous. But I was naked in bed, sleepy, didn't feel motivated to rush downstairs and get out of the house before it crumbles to the ground.

I was about to make some smart-ass comments about not feeling it here in Western Washington...then I saw the news and pictures.

Looks like Napa really got its ass kicked by this one.

I see that, as usual, most of the damage appears to be un-reinforced masonry structures. (old brick buildings)

Yup, it lasted a long time, I thought and I got profanity pissed off. I was worried it was the Big One somewhere, and I couldn't get my computer to log on to the California Earthquake Authority for about ten minutes after. I was very surprised they called it a 6.

PS, I see on TV just now that there was some pretty bad damage in Napa and also fires so it WAS a big one for some.

Yeah, how big it is for you depends on two main things: The severity (Richter scale or whatever they call the current scale), how far you are from the epicenter. Of course, geological concerns have an effect on how the energy is propogated. A 6 has probably less than 1/1000th the energy of an 8, maybe 1/10,000 of a 9. But it can definitely mess up your life if you are near the epicenter.

I felt it too! I immediately took to google to see if it was already on the news, it wasn't but to my surprise it turns out the USGS has a pretty damn good site and the info about the quake was already on it!

Nope. Don't live in California any more (thank goodness!), but was in Oakland when the Loma Prieta hit, in '89. Rock and Roll, San Andreas style!

You want long lasting? Guam, August 8, 1993. Damn earthquake lasted 60 seconds....which is an eternity, during an earthquake! Initially measured as an 8.1, think it was eventually downgraded to a 7.8 magnitude. :awe:
