EARTHQUAKE near DC

The earth shook for around 5-7 seconds here in NYC. I was standing in front of a china cabinet; the dishes and bowls were clearly swaying and rocking back and forth in inch increments. Then the earth started making a low rumbling sound.

At first, I thought it was my next-door neighbor doing construction.... except he doesn't own a wrecking ball. I only realized it was a quake when the floor started to do the two-step with me. It was a weird experience attempting to regain my balance a few minutes later.

I can only imagine what West coasters have gone through in the past.

This is news because it's not commonplace on the east coast, period.

despite all the jokes, there actually was a good deal of damage to some historic structures, and earthquake insurance isn't exactly wide spread.

There was a historic house near the epicenter that sustained major damage, the National Cathedral sustained some rather expensive damage. Louisa County High School sustained extensive damage.

There are certainly many older structures and certainly less earthquake prepared structures around Virginia than in Southern California.

Washington Monument cracked by earthquake, closed indefinitely


The National Park Service says engineers have found a crack near the top of the Washington Monument presumably caused by a magnitude-5.8 earthquake that shook the East Coast.

Park service spokesman Bill Line said Tuesday night that structural engineers found the crack where the 555-foot landmark narrows considerably.


He says the monument will be closed indefinitely to keep the public safe.


The 91,000-ton monument is made of Maryland marble.

Faquier and Culpeper schools in VA are closed tomorrow, too. Those are 50 miles from the epicenter. Not sure what the people think the problem is going to be.

They are inspecting the buildings. It's not like buildings in the east are built with earthquakes in mind so it seems a reasonable precaution.
