Damn thing woke me up at 5am. A lot of stuff in my room was rattling. I thought it was a dream. (Fayetteville, GA)

Surprised it didn't bring my computer out of stand-by mode.

On front page of Yahoo now.

Just felt a very slight aftershock a few minutes ago, the cats starting hissing just before I felt it.

No damage reports in Georgia I am aware of but there were some power outages in the Epicenter area on the Alabama side, a Trailer knocked off it's foundation and some cracked Chimneys, Sheetrock and Foundations.

This quake was definitely one of those that you had to be sitting still or lying down to feel it.

When I still lived in OH (many many years ago) a mild earthquake hit one summer, and I was sitting in a chair when it happened, so I felt it.

The one last night was stronger, since it shook my recliner enough to make it rock, with me still sitting in it!

BTW: To be honest, I didn't react too much...I was too busy chopping down Rags with my L3 Catapult in Mech Assault.
BTW2: I have to admit, tho...I thought at first it was some weird force-feedback effect from the controller or something. LOL!

I was on the phone with a school teacher in Soddy Daisy, TN. Her class went nuts when an aftershock hit.

Sheesh, talk about overreacting.

An earthquake of that magnitude people don't even talk about here. I think we had one within the last month easily. *walks around scared* Oh no, California is going to fall into the ocean, oh no.

Actually, every time there is a feelable earthquake California folks post about it. I can start linking you threads if you wish.

Is a prime example of getting just a little too excited about this. Also his mother calling him, freaking *him* out enough because she was freaking out. This whole thread is a bit ridiculous. Granted there aren't a lot of earthquakes there, but come on? Wasn't even a five, most people probably slept through it.

My mother lived in SeaTac for 5 years. She has felt earthquakes before, but this one felt a good bit stronger considering the epicenter was just a few miles from her house. Secondly, there has been about 8 inches of rain on top the of the mountain there in the past week or so. Thirdly, she lives on the VERY edge of the mountain. I mean if you go in the backyard you are about to fall 3000ft to Valley Head. Fourthly, it knocked a bunch of crap off of shelves and walls. I felt that I needed to go check out the house considering my mother is not in very good health and cannot be walking around looking a the foundation on the side of a mountain. There are rock and mud slides near her all the time so I thought I needed to make sure there wasn't anything that hit the house. There were some rocks in the road when I went up the mountain and a few cracks in the roads. My cats were pretty pissed off and one cat kept ripping fur off of himself(he does it when upset).

You know, Cali folks don't have much experience with tornadoes so I guess I could say some things my self. I guess if a F0-F1 hit your parent's house I would just laugh it off as a minor tornado. Hell, it doesn't even do THAT much damage. I mean cmon... we sleep through F5s here.

Common southeast US natural disasters - tornados (usually accompanied by lightning and hail up to the size of grapefruits), floods (including the flash variety), forest/brush fires, violent summer thunderstorms (read lightning), draught, hurricanes, and the "newly" identified disaster: straight winds

Cali what do you have?

I've been through some big tornado's when I was visiting friends in the mid west, so I doubt I'd be posting on here when they came through. And an F5 tornado would be like an earthquake of 7+, so don't see how that

and "we sleep through F5s here." is supposed to make things even with my we sleep through eartuquakes of 5 here in Cali. And sure, dig up the threads where people posted about earthquakes here. More than likely, all they'll say is "Wow, did you feel that? We had a baby quake. Oh well."

I see you don't quite understand what I said. First of all, the only parallel I drew relating tornadoes to earthquakes, was based on the occurance of said disaster in a certain area. I said a F0-F1 tornado ONLY because you said it was a weak earthquake and people were OVERREACTING. I stated that you might have a reaction if a F0-F1 tornado hit your parent's house. Your statement saying "And an F5 tornado would be like an earthquake of 7+..." is down right moronic. There is no way to make a fair comparison between the two events. It is a total apples to oranges comparison. The Fujita scale is based upon damage, whereas the Richter scale is NOT based upon damage. To presume any different is both asinine and absurd. Secondly, the F5 comment was a sarcastic comment to you based on the fact that you said people sleep through magnitude 5 or lessor earthquakes. That is an equally absurd statement. Search the archived messages for earthquake and you will see several threads from people in Cali, NE, etc reporting that a less than 5 quake woke them up.

When did you go through a big(f3+) tornado? I am assuming you mean it hit you dead on or caused damage very nearby(less than a mile). Shocking that several hit you while you were just "visiting." I am going to guess you are talking about a tornado warning and wouldn't know a tornado if it sucked your head out of your ass.

I went back and looked through USGS archives and it seem the whole state of California normally averages 1-3 quakes over a 4.9 each year. You have a lot of small ones, but a 4.9 is feelable either way. It seems you whole idea of a 4.9 not being a big deal is only if you have your head in the sand like most people in Cali.

Nice troll and next time there is a California earthquake thread I will be there to keep you in line. Just make sure you don't slide into the ocean.

I live in Smyrna (just outside of ATL) and slept right thru it. I was surprised to hear that we had one. I have slept thru earthquakes in Japan, Okinawa, Cali and Georgia now. Even when I am awake and feel one, I just continue with what I am doing. Wickedest time was when I got back from chow duty in the chow hall in Oki and sat down to read the Stars and Stripes and felt the ground start shaking and just looked up at the window to watch a crack form in the wall.

Never thought I would experience that in my lifetime especially since living over here in the Southeast.
Very few people thought it was an Earthquake right away including Donna and she lived in California for 5 years and experienced a 5 second temblor that had her swing in the chair. I woke up and told her Earthquake right away and she didn't believe me until the windows started rattling.
