True! Computers are obsolete after 12 months. 18 months old and they are ancient.

$4K? Jesus, why spend that much, you can practically get a decent used car for that. My Honda cost me $4800 and it is a great car

A 2407 can be had for under $600. I bought mine at $600 and DO NOT REGRET IT ONE BIT. Worth every damn cent.

Now, I would have to reconsider if I bought anything much larger or more expensive. I already have to turn my head a slight bit, depending on my position, to view the sides. My face is probably 18" from the screen, FWIW.

Currently assistant manager of a retail store. Think I'm crazy?

edit: all prices are in CDN $ in case you were wondering.

edit: for those wondering the 30" monitor mentioned in the replies below would probably be a Dell 3007WFP.

edit:Now updated with actual system.

not crazy, but foolish. you remind me of a roommate, who got a loan for school and ended up using the money to buy a dog, computer, and leased a car.

why save diligently if you're going to spend lavishly as a 'reward'?

Well I'm not touching the 20,000 I've saved and plan on saving more once I have this built. I tend not to spend hardly any of my money on anything, have no bills, etc and save everything. So once in a while I go crazy. If you look at what others spend on their car and rent its probably way more over time.

*one* hard drive?

Yeah well it is a Terrabyte drive though. Mind you that's a LOT of data to loose but I can't afford 2. I could go for 2 cheaper smaller drives in RAID.

I know from polls here before that quite a few people have around a TB of total HD storage between all their HDs, not that it's the norm mind you. Movies, TV shows, images, sound, HD resolution video, years of archived sh!t, pr0n, it all adds up. Just think about how much space it takes to store all the seasons of your average medium length (5-7 seasons) television show in good resolution.

Update 04/25/08: Add to that a Pentax K20D now :) No I do not regret buying the computer or the camera and my savings are more than before now.

Screw the $13/hr job, you can go into the future and buy a sports almanac!

Come to think of it, that would make a cool movie plot.

Do you think you're disciplined enough to make this one large purchase and then continue saving?

Depends on how you look at it I guess. I bought the computer and now I've bought the camera so I've made 2 big purchase on the same income. However I don't spend money on much else and my savings have continued to increase so...
