Spending that kinda dough on a monitor isn't bad. 7+ years ago I spent >$900cdn on the Mitsubishi Diamond Plus monitor I still use today. It's all dingy from dirty hands and there's some gouges in the glass from a poorly placed Case Side getting knocked over, but it's still a great Monitor that works fine. Spending >$2k(actually I find even $2k to be overkill :D) is really poor bang/buck.

Figure out what you want it to do, read reviews and what not, then get the parts that do it at the lowest price. It's ultimately your money though and you are accountable to no one, especially to us here. However, I reserve the right to call you a "Fool" if the mood fits!! :p :D:D

Have you actually sat behind a 3007FPW? Its a monster that usually ends up being rather large. Several people at work got them and they were too big for their tastes. I would get the 2407FPW and save the $500 for a video card upgrade later.

People spend that on vacations all the time. At least google some nice places and take screenshots!

Why do you need to spend so much?
Bragging rights or some special need?

I dont think that I have spent that much if you totalled up every PC I have ever owned.

I built a nice C2D gaming system for $1,250, and that includes the LCD and a legit copy of Windows. I can't imagine spending more than $2,000 nowadays.

Confirmed. Unless you are an AVID and I mean waste 4 hours a day PC gamer, you might as well light 20 hundred dollar bills on fire.
Ever consider starting a retirement investment? I have no idea what is available for you up there, but 2 grand that you put in at this young age and forgot about, that could be a nice start once you are through school.

I am not totally oblivious to saving by any means. Like I said I have more than 20K saved up for school at the moment. And I have thought of butting away a few grand in a longer term savings plan a few times too.

wth? do you not have any bills or anything?

Nope not really. I am currently living with my parents, don't drive, don't own a car.

Hehe yeah I'll definitely be a late mover but I have no plans on staying with my parents forever. I know several people in their late 20s, maybe early 30s still with their parents.

You're stupid, but if you think ti's that important to you, go ahead. It's nobody's money but yours.

Not crazy, just young and stupid.

We all make mistakes and learn from them later on.

A year or two from now, you'll look back at this thread and wonder why you didn't listen.

Whatever floats your boat, but what the hell parts did you choose that cause $4k? Last time I looked at parts, you can get a SLI, 2Gb, Dual core for ~$2k Canadian. Went for those diamond sails fairings to cut down on air resistance eh? Or maybe those 2 extra cores you'll use in 4 years and Fatal!ty crap...

6 months later, that $4k computer will be worth about $800.....if you part it out and sell it in FS/T. :)

I swear sometimes, a computer is a worse depreciator than an automobile.

When I was in high school and in college, I bought a lot of stupid stuff but you can do that when you have little responsibility. Even if I invested some of that money in cd, I think the sheer entertainment was worth more.

I recommend buying a decent core2duo Dell from the small business site and leaving it at that. I'm not sure what deals they give you on the Dell Canadian site, but I wouldn't waste money like that. $2k goes a long way at the strip club...

Seriously though, that money is probably worth more to you somewhere else. Computers depreciate too fast to buy bleeding edge hardware.

Well, there are certainly other things you could use that money for, be it purchasing something beneficial or letting it collect interest. If, however, you've been working your ass off for a while, and computers are one of the only joys in your life, then I fully agree with the building of your ultimate machine.

Just remember that the machine you build today for $4,000 can be built in a year for $2,000. It's a poor investment by practical standards. You just have to decide on whether or not you live "in-the-now" or "in-the-future-when-you're-older-and-a-little-less-able-to-enjoy-youth-and-money."

In another point, I don't suggest you get one large monitor. You should be shooting for a quad-display setup. Just because the monitor is huge dimension-wise, doesn't mean the resolution will be proportionately huge. You already stated that you have a large TV for viewing movies, so the only practical approach for your computer would be to cram in as many pixels as possible.

Same here on both counts. I upgrade probably once every 2 years and I spend about $1k each time. You just have to hunt around/wait for the good deals on the parts that are one notch below top of the line.

It would be nice to have a 30" monitor though. I saw one in Costco the other day and it made my 22" feel tiny.

Not sure how old/young you are, but I would also advise against it. I would get a middle-ground computer and start looking at a car. Doesn't have to be something fancy, but say you drop $2,000 on a very nice computer, you can put $2,000 down on a decent car.

I can speak from experience when I say that having a hefty car payment and living on your own drains your wallet very quickly. If you can knock out the car right now, you should be set.

A car would be more useful in picking up chicks too. If you're into that sort of thing.

I make more than double what you make.. and I already have my degree.. and I just built a $1100 computer and felt like I was splurging like crazy.

A $4000 computer is absolutely insane.. there is no fvcking way a $4000 computer is $2000 better than a $2000 computer. A $1100 computer gets 60fps+ framerates on the highest settings on all the games I've tried to play.. at 1680*1050.

So, either build a cheaper computer or get ripped off. Ya, you're crazy if you go through with it.

When you see 39year-olds making $10/hour at a coffee shop, ever wonder why they're willing to be 39 and work at a coffee shop? It's because they were willing to buy $4000 computers.
