EA rumoured to be considering aquiring Crytek

Well I have to ask this. Why is EA the only big publisher willing to take risks? Acquiring Crytek may not be such a big risk but they also buy and publish a lot of small risky games when no one else is willing to.

That is why after they buy a game company, they do nothing but force them to create sequal after sequal and expansion pack after expansion pack.

They buy a small competitor and gut them then produce a long line of sequels to an already sucessful game. How is that taking risks?

Seems like all PC games will be made by EA in the near future. 🙁
Most developers need to step up to the plate and self publish through online distribution. Its not hard. If Stardock can do it, any developer can.

Umm...
Steam....

Why self publish when you can use an already tested medium? And may people already ARE using Steam.

They have not taken a risk since the late 90's.
There is no risk in swallowing up your competition and destroying them.
And publishing a game is much different from making it.
The handful of games they have that I like are the ones actually made by somebody else.

I feel it important to keep this thread bumped, in the hope that some EA execs will read this & obligingly commit massive amounts of fraud, leading to the dramatic bankruptcy of EA :|

Agreed. For all people's b|tching about it, Steam seems like the only clear road to salvation for PC gaming. I know many people don't want to hear it, but the platform has improved considerably since it was released.

From Pontifex, who is on an involuntary vacation for a little while 😉

I hate EA more than anythything else on this green earth

I read through the post and I don't think there was 1 good thing said about EA in it. Whats funny though, is if you say something bad about BF2, everyone comes to defend it and EA or these are the 1st people to go out and buy the next BF2 expansion pack.

As for Steam being a good platform, well, yes and no. I like the platform and the idea that you can buy and then download games, but their bandwidth is horrible. i never get more than 70 kb/s when downloading from them. Direct2Drive is 5x faster. The other problem, and this happens with both platforms, is game selection and pricing. rather poor selection and expensive prices. they still sell games through there at the original release price for way after the game has gone down to half price at other retailers. if they could get more titles and be competitive with prices, they would do much better imo.

Apparently this rumor was squased some time last week. EA reps everywhere state "EA is not in negotiation for the acquisition of Crytek."

Pontifex's complaints about steam are valid. While I occasionally get more then 70kb/s, it often tops out around there and it isn't unsual for it to be even worse. Of course, for just patches this is sufficient but I recently redownloaded all my stuff and it took a pretty damn long time. I think they need to do something about that. Surely most players aren't downloading whole games daily so it shouldn't be that tough to setup a few pipes that just push out the main content at a reasonable pace.

And its true their prices aren't great. I get around this by just buying the titles in the conventional manner where I can get the price break of buying an older game. But the prices never really go down on steam itself. In fact, I think they removed the option of buying HL2 + HL2😀M + CS:S in one pack and split them up. Although, I think their multiplayer only titles are priced fair at $20. And valve continues to release new content (maps, features) well after the game is bought. (Of course, they've been pretty skimpy on the initial offerings for this so they really have to do that)

I think the game selection for steam is just because of what its designed to do. Its mostly for pushing valve's own stuff and smaller developers use them as an affordable platform. I'm sure valve is open to working with bigger projects, but big projects usually have their own publishing agreements in place before they even start developing...and steam hasn't been around THAT long. I think the situation there will change in time.
