I understand the hate towards EA.......... but I dont understand all the love for Valve's Steam. IMO, it sucks just as bad or maybe even a tad worse than Origin.

WTF? Seriously? You think Origin is just as good if not a tad better then Steam? Holy shit

I can't speak for others, but I don't have a single complaint about Origin. I don't understand why people actually want Steam to monopolize digital distribution.

I don't want that. But for me it doesn't make sense to install multiple platforms to buy from each publisher. This is why I pretty much restrict myself to buying either drm free games from Gog or amazon or Steam/steamwork games.

I like Origin, and I like Steam, they're about equal imho. Personally I preferred the old school way of just buying the game, having the disc and cool box and all. Now most games even if you have the retail kit you still have to attach it to some kind of service, lame. Anyway, both are 9,999,999,999,999,999x better than Microsoft Live or whatever that crap is. Weird, as all the Xbox fanboys swear by Xbox live, that Microsoft would apparently build a good product for their console, and garbage for the PC.

How is it equal? Origin games expire after a certain period of time. You also have to download the games and install them, unlike Steam which makes every game portable.

I think the entire f2p model the industry is headed in is a bad idea. I was extremely excited for Generals 2, for example, until it was recently announced that it would be f2p. Now, I am significantly more worried, and am doubtful that they will be able to create a balanced game when people can spend more money to unlock various parts of the game, thereby creating an unfair and uncompetitive advantage. Instead of making me buy it at release, as a standard model would have done, the f2p model made me unlikely to play the game at all.

On a serious note F2P games can be ok if it's say a mmorpg style game and the extra stuff you can get is not game breaking equipment or small bonuses like extra exp.

It lets you test it out unlike what it used to be where games made you pay $50-60 or you can't even try it at all.

However if you have to spend more then a normal monthly fee like some games have, $10-$15, to have fun then it's not going to be played.

On the other hand I stay far far away from other type of games like FPS games as those are games of skill and being able to buy winning weapons ruins the game then.

I don't have a single complaint about stream. What are yours?

I used to travel a lot for work and liked to play single player games on my laptop. On numerous occasions I would be somewhere without a stable internet connection and Steam would lock me out of my games. Offline mode you say? LOL! Even though I kept everything up to date and had it set to offline mode before leaving a good connection, later I still would be locked out due to the cloud sync or some other BS. Then there were the times I would actually forget to go into offline mode before disconnecting somewhere.........only to find you couldnt get into offline mode without logging into your Steam account first, WTF!!!, EPIC FAIL!

On another occasion (this was a several years ago) a steam update failed and I was locked out of my account nearly 3 weeks. You ever try to get anything resolved with Valve's CS? Let me tell you, it frickin sucks! They have some of the worst customer service Ive ever dealt with.

I prefer old school physical copies that I can install and update as I see fit, I dont need a program to hold my hand and tell how and when I can play/update/mod the games I paid for. Take CoD4 for instance, I bought one copy and can install it on any machine any where. I can even play that same copy online on as many machines as I like at the same time as long as they are all on the same IP address. This is an epic win for a someone like me who has kids who like to play the same game together, with Steam/Origin/other DRM, I now have to buy a license for each family member to do that. Yes, Im a cheap bastard!

I find it hilarious when people complain about DRM and then turn around and profess their love for Steam, WTF do you think Steam is???

As far as Origin and Steam are concerned how is how they stack up to me:

Steam has a slicker UI (Origin has made vast improvements is gaining ground with theirs, IMO)

Origin's downloads are faster for me.

My experience with Origin's customer service is by far better than Valve's.

EA has a long history of buying out dev companies and then running them into the ground. I look forward to their demise.

the only problem i have with origin is... it's completely unnecessary. sure it functions MOSTLY ok as a client for downloading games... but then with bf3 all your game connections, stats, everything... is done through a browser window.

with steam there's the built in browser, the overlay you can access in game to talk to friends and join games, previews for games, demos, etc. hell you can even set steam up to start your non-steam games to show off to your friends what you're playing.

if we're talking features... it's not even a contest. it's the difference between... steam taking your hand and showing you all the awesome water slides and pool toys to convince you to get into the pool. and origin showing you a pool... then throwing a cup of water in your face.

PC gaming - the most open fragmented platform in the world.

Getting to the point where I'll be using 3 different "platforms" (Steam/GFWL/Origin) if not 4 (Uplay) to enjoy my games on my PC. Factor in the features war between AMD and nVidia and I'll have two GPUs too.

Then I look at the Dark Soul's game...

Remind me again why PC gaming is *better*?

Fan made content, and add-on modifications.

With EA, what have they brought to the gaming community that was new or revolutionary?

Lets go back 15 years to 1997. There were two strategy games that ruled the market - command & conquer, and warcraft.

EA bought westwood studios, the processed to run command & conquer into the ground.

Blizzard released diablo, diablo II, warcraft 3, starcraft, world of warcraft, diablo 3,,,.

As game companies like blizzard and valve keep new ideas coming into the market, ea dishes out the same thing over and over and over and over.

So, by your understanding, I can only buy a house if I have the cash on hand?

actually this is true.

Good luck finding a loan unless u can put half down with today's loan rates, even tho u have excellent credit.

I don't hate EA, they played their hand. The bigger they are the harder they fall. They got so big gobbling up every little bit of hope but didn't focus on the details that make you successful with people. Valve is doing the opposite by promoting the small details and developers.

Unfortunately for me I find big ticket games to be lack luster and I MISS how awesome and long big games used to be

I am one of the sheep buying their sports game (NHL) every year though just because I love hockey and its really the only choice. I might venture to buy one of their other sports franchise games just for fun too

I just hope that the eventual downfall of EA doesn't destroy Bioware. Despite SW TOR, I like their games, especially Dragon Age. I'm sure there are other individual developers that are equally deserving for other games.

The fall of Battlefield however, as sad as it would be, would provide a sales gap in which competition might enter the team based shooter field and the new guys might not decide to court CoD players so much.

Hey maybe the BF developers go along with the kickstarter projects alike and make a proper game finnaly without share holders poking them :p

For some reason, I'm certain this would backfire.

EA's management meshed in with Valve's?

No, thank you.

Valve have no managers :)

I could see Gabe buying EA then gutting the company, letting loose all the corporate slime they employ and doing wonderful things with the IP they get from the deal. One can dream...
