No, my understanding is they are keeping the M3 name because it is such a well-known, iconic model. I believe you're right as to all the other models, though, and the M coupe version of the 1-series will be the M2.

Keep in mind, folks, this is just an artist's rendering, and my guess is that BMW will use kid gloves in restyling the 3-series, which is their bread and butter model.

hmmm. i stared at it for 2 minutes trying to like it. but NOPE! doesnt do anything for me. no salivating at the mouth, no tingle in the stomach, no feeling of jealousy that i get from looking at the current m3/m5

ur right i just read it in Motor Trend Magazine that they will keep the M3 name for both the coupe and the saloon models
but the 4-series wont be out till 2006 now?!?!
new 3-series will debut end of 2005 as a 2006 model

it wont look like this!!
at least not with all the flared wheel wells
and that front chin bumper will be totally different
the rest of it looks KICK ASS!!!
