Hi all

I've just built my new rig and im having some real cpu temperature issues.

I have a retail Intel E8400 3.0gig. Im using the stock cooler which came with it on an A-bit IP35 Pro XE board.

My first problem was that the bios says my CPU temp is at 90c at idle which I think is bollox as the heatsink is cool.. I've had to disable to board temperature warnings.

I installed a few windows monitoring programs and they put the core temps at 30-40 idle and raising to near 90c when under load.

The cooler is properly mounted and the fan running at overdrive..

I know this isnt normal..... Is this my board giving dodgy readings ??? I hear the Abits IP35 have CPU bios issues regarding the Wolfdales.

My system HAS not been overclocked...

Would it be worth be shelling out some hard earned spondoolies on a better cooler such as an Arctic Cooling AC-FRZ-7P Freezer 7 etc ?????

Any info would help here...

Many thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the Forums!

I would be re-checking your HS. With those temps, it is almost certain that it isn't properly seated. The stock HeatSinks are difficult to seat due to the pin mounting system. You will most likely have to remove the Motherboard and reseat your sink. You should be seeing the pins go ALL the way through the board with the plastic wings showing to be locked to the back side of the board.

Yup...

Checked that lots of times already just to see if its moving. There is no space between the HS and chip..... The twist lock system on these heatsinks are CRAP too. Very cheap and fiddley

How do the windows programs know my cpu temperture ?? Does it take it from the bios ?

I here these Abit boards are way out regarding CPU temps on these chips.

Well I use CoreTemp for my readings and it's pretty good. Still, somethings wrong about your temps. Did you remove your board to take a visual? With temps like that leans towards the HS. Maybe 1 corner isnt seated all the way and it just may look like it.. Your best bet IS to make sure.

download real temp and ortho, run ortho and report back what you see in real temp. let's get a reliable temp reading first.

I have the same problem with my e8500 on an Abit P35-E. Bios reads way high and alarms but heatisink is seated, pins are latched and I've even taken is apart and changed to a different style heatsink. Fan is spinning and fins cool to touch so I booted it in XP and ran Realtemp and temps are quite normal at idle and load. I've since given up on the BIOS issue, disabled the alarm and running at 4GHz for the past couple months without incident- OCCT and prime stable. Same board previously ran fine with an e6420. I have another board I could try it on but that hasn't made it to the TOP of my list of things to do.

Yep, I have seen temp readings go way out of poportion and it is best to know for sure, then have a more reliable program that reads your bios as opposed to the Mobo bios itself....

I checked the HS again and it happened that one of the corner clips had come a little loose. These push locks are CRAP !!! They all clicked in when I assembled it and was very firm.

Since then, the core temperatures using coretemp have settled at about 45 -50 under load but the bios reads 93c no matter what its doing..

These IP35's are great boards but there is obviously a bug in them.. There hasnt been a bios update since May I think...

The heatsink is VERY cool to the touch.

@Ted -- You may want to ask this question at the uabit forum. The guys there are very helpful and could give you guidance as to which bios is best for your particular CPU. I can't comment on your mobo as I have the IP35-E.

^^ Yep dont trust those push pins fans they will mess your cpu up, there has been a guy trying to get Intel to change them because they are complete crap. Even when you do set them right there is no guarantee they wont pop out later. Go get a screw fan like this one and your problems will be solved.

This is what the intel stock fan should be, and we pay enough money for them to supply us with 4 screws to secure out heatsink those cheap bastards.

FYI, my IP35-E has no issues reporting proper temps in BIOS.

What bios version you using?

What BIOS version/date are you running?

This was going to be my next question.

It's good that you found that the HS was a start and now you know for sure that your sink is out of the equation until you decide to over clock.......:)

Nerp, what bios version are YOU running? I have an IP35-E, upgraded from 1.5 to 1.8 bios to prepare for an upgrade from e2180 to e8400. When I installed the e8400, the bios said CPU temp was 98 degrees C, all the time.
I had to reverse the upgrade because I couldn't boot in to Windows XP. BOSD before login screen. Even booting from the Windows setup disk BSOD'ed when it got to "Starting Windows'. I'm wondering if I should flash an older BIOS.

I have an E8400 C0 stepping and an after-market no-name cooler and my temps get pretty high even at stock 3GHz and 1.15 volts in the BIOS.

Turns out Abit IP35 boards are not quite ready for the new E0 stepping of the e8400. Have seen many reports of steady very high CPU temperature in BIOS.
If you have a PC speaker attached to the board, you may hear the overtemp siren. As I don't, I can't confirm this.

ill have to check mine when i get home, im running a Abit P35E and i dont think i ever had any of these temp issues in the bios when running the stock cooler, i have an Ultima-90 on it now which keeps it under 60C Load OCed at 4GHz

im running whatever bios came with it when i got it 02/08
