5t3v0,

Do you think this fan/hs would work for the NB area? It's a bit pricey, but what do you think?

Link?

The Freezer doesnt have a lot of clearance & only just fits over the standard HS. Any replacement would have to be no taller. Why are you going replacing it anyways?

Ok I am curious here.

First, I like to know who's using speed fan and what offset did you use to adjust you core temp. Obviously, core temps can't be below ambient. when first installing speed fan core temps where like 11 -13 C. this cannot be. If ambient is like 22 than this means that Tcase should be around 23-24. As far as I could gather, Core Temps (Tjonction) should be around 15 C higher than Tcase which would put Idle temps of cores at around 39 C. am I wrong ? 39-40 Idle almost put my temps at the same level as the Box HS.

You mean, the only adjustments you did to speedfan is an offset of + 15 on both cores and that's it ? If this the case, are you able to corroborate these readings with another program ?

From what I could gather form Graysky guide, I thought that the + 15 offset was for Quads !

Each core is off by 15C for the G0's. It doesn't matter if its a dual or quad.

5t3v0,

Sorry forgot the link, it is this one:

SniperDaws & 5t3v0 & anyone else,

What about this fan, it's width looks interesting and possible, even though it looks designed for RAM according to the newegg reviews...I wonder if it can be mounted correctly on the NB...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16835119011

it says on the specs "Not only cooling the RAM modules, also for other components."

.....

cleverest,

Why do you think you need a fan on the NB anyway? Did you measure the temp? What is way too hot to hold?

LOL...I haven't even powered on my computer yet....expecting my OS hard drive to arrive ANY second now...and the SATA optical drive convertors so I can install windows, hehe :)

Honestly I don't know that I do need a NB fan, it just seems to be recommended everywhere I look for this board if you are overclocking....just want the best possible starting conditions I guess...

Since I have a XCLIO A380BK case, with a side 250MM fan blowing right on my chipset/MB, perhaps I'll find I don't need another solution at all....what do you think?

Here is my case (BTW I love it! When it's turned off SO FAR at least...hehe)

(click the images gallery and look closer at the side fan (which is adjustable and supposedly quiet) :-D

mrfatboy, I have the exact same ram like you (2 X 1gig Crucial Ballistixs DDR2 800(1:1) 4-4-4-12 ) and I ran it at 2.1V or 2.2V like you did but it was too hot for me when I was touching it with my finger.

Then I found an other forum where the guys were running their ballistix ram at 1.9V and 2V so I tried 1.9V at 800mhz 4-4-4-12 and to my surprise it ran perfect! I have stressed my computer by playing callofduty 2 , colin mcrae dirt, stranglehold, battlefield 2142 etc and absolutly no problem.

So I suggest you to lower ur voltage.

BTW my E4300 is oc from 1.8GHZ at 3GHZ

Why would you want to spend $33 on a chipset hsf? Are you planning on overclocking to insane speeds & voltages? That thing is 63mm high which definitely wont fit under the Freezer & might only just fit to the side of it. The other fan is unlikely to fit although you can stick anything to anything with enough gaffer tape. The stock cooler is fine even for moderate overvolting of the MCH. If you have some instability that you feel is down to the NB temp or just want to actively cool it for peace of mind, just fix a 40mm fan onto the hsf that's there. The Scythe SY124010L will do the job nicely.

@cleverest,

Holy crap! :) lol, I would be surprised if you need a fan on the NB. I would be worried about getting accidently sucked into that thing :)

@newschool,

I can run that ram at 1.9V at 3.2gig OC. However, to achieve 3.6 OC I had to put my ram to 2.1v. That is at 14 hours Orthos stable. Those video games are not going to stress your system as hard as Orthos. Try Orthos and see what you can do. I would like to hear your results. The ram is rated to 2.2v anyway so I should be fine. You have a nice OC, btw :)

FFS! Do you need to screw that thing to the floor? I dont think you'll have any temp issues with those fans.

5t3v0,

LOL, ya the fans rock (well turned off....) I have hopes that when I turn them on they will rock even more....from all I'm reading they are very quiet too.....if my computer flies out the window you will be the first one to know about it!

Thanks for the specific link recommendation, that helps me a lot....so many darn options and so many won't work!

Man I'm gonna win the most lazy custom pc builder award for this, but....what do you recommend to mount it? What screws or otherwise?? Do you have another newegg link? hehe

5t3v0,

When I go into the PC health option in the BIOS my DDR Ram Test says FAIL. Does yours? I believe it only says fail if I add more volts past the 1.8v. Not sure tho. What do you think?

I was just curious about the relationship between OC clocking and what that translates to in the real world.

I was bored so I ran Super PI at 1M calc. at the 3 different overclocks.

CPU (%) Super PI (%)
Speed (OC) Time
2.66 (0%) 19.109 (0%)
3.2 (20%) 15.89 (-17%)
3.6 (35%) 14.1 (-26%)

As you can see, just because you have a 35% OC doesn't really mean you are 35% faster :(

p.s.
I wish this forum had formatting. I have spacing in between those columns but anandtech is taking out for some reason :( Just squint your eyes and you see it. :)

@cleverest, I used 1 of the screws that came with my fan & 1 from my toolbox. I needed a larger screw for the gap where there is that slit in the fins. If I lived in the US I'd send you some as I have loads spare. I really dont think you'll need the NB fan tho. To answer your Q from the other forum, I just put a rice grain sized blob in the middle & spread it across the chip surface with my index finger. I dont suppose my skin cells will help conduct the heat much tho. You could wear rubber gloves or use a bendy piece of plastic I guess.

@mrFB, Mine says fail too. I think you're right - it's when the voltage goes above 1.8v. The OK/Fail instead of a voltage display is my biggest gripe about these Gigabyte boards. BTW, I'm only getting 14.8 on SuperPI 1M. Why is your's so much faster when we have the same spec? Must be fecking Vista!

lol, I do run a very streamlined system. I don't like a lot of crap running in the background. I actually just tested again without outlook and skype running.

I now get 14.015 sec for 1M superpi. Looks like you have more tweaking to do :)

5t3v0,

Thanks for the info, I'll try to see how things run without a fan before I worry about it. About applying the AS5 to the NB (if I decide to do that at least...mine seems pretty securely attached right now), I suppose a QTIP would also work to spread it out a little...also someone was saying AS5 is more dangerous then their creme version (on chipsets, cause of small surface area's, etc...), apparently AS5 is a wee bit more conductive Vs. not conductive at all like the creme....I guess if you're a moron it's dangerous.... :p

Only one Hour to go until their deadline on my OS drive delivery...coming UPS next day air saver...I can't hardly wait!! Driving me nuts...go figure they have to take as long as possible/allowed!
