lol, I hear that. :) How about trying to figure out what that "High Speed DRAM DLL Settings" option does in the BIOS. :) Maybe it will allow us to OC to 4.0 on AIR :)

what does Standard, Turbo and Extreme do, i thought those settings didnt do anything unless you used auto for mem timings, well ive got my mem timings set to manual at 4-4-4-12 like in my sig but if i set Extreme with my current OC my pc isnt as stable so it must be doing somthing, But i spent a few hours on the net looking for the diffrence between Option 1 and option 2 and just gave up cos i found nothing.

Infact im talking nonsense i just set it to Turbo in my bios and it wouldnt boot so what does this do?

I thought those "Standard, Turbo, etc" settings were for OC profiles. They don't do a very good job. It's manual settings all the way for the win!

I know! There is absolutely nothing on the net about those option 1 & 2 settings. Somebody needs to call gigabyte tawain :)

Well i thought that CIA2 was the auto OC, and that Standard, Turbo and Extreme did somthing diffrent to speed things up a little.

Anyway ive been looking about and stumbled on this

http://www.gideontech.com/content/articles/363/1

its shows another board turning up without the Northbridge cooler attached, But this guy shouldnt be reviewing anything, Read the part about "No options to alter the ram timings"

that's funny! Gigabyte has been using the Ctrl+F1 option to set memory timmings for years :)

Do you all use Auto mem timings apart from the 4-4-4-12?

i mean is there a way to tweak the rest of mem timings to speed thisng up or is the increase not worth it?

Well come on dont be holding out on me gentlemen, do you use Auto or manual for the rest of the memory timings or what?
:p

Auto. Tried tightening a couple up & couldn't even load windows without bsod so gave up. I'll restart & let you know what the defaults are for these sticks.

ACT to ACT delay: 3
Rank write to read delay: 3
Write to precharge delay: 6
Refresh to ACT delay: 42
Read to precharge delay: 3
Trd: 8
Trd phase adjustment: 25

Not exactly a bundle of options is it. Still, the gains from tuning memory are so small that it's not really time well spent IMO. I did it with my last system & got 3dmark improvements in single figures after days of tweaking.

I've just tried my first OC on my E6600 and have got up from 2.4 to 2.85 (9x316)...idle temp is 36 and load temp with orthos running for 4 hours is 52-55.
Is there a sensor for the Northbridge (apart from your finger!) as I am wary of pushing it without knowing how hot it is?
Also, what is a good way of attaching a small (40mm spare i have) onto the northbridge heatsink if anyone knows?

Going to aim for 3ghz as soon as i feel comfortable with NB temps.

(E6600, 2gb Kingston Value 667 rate ram, GA-P35C-DSR3, Geforce 8800 GTS 640mb@630/900)

Thanks, Roo

@5t3v0
I figured as much. Even going from 5-5-5-15 to 4-4-4-12 was not a big deal. I keep telling you OPTION 2 will take us to 4.0! :) lol

@roorooroo
There really is not an easy way to tell NB temp. I had the same question. Check out this thread.

@roo
Can you touch it and keep your fingers on it for 10 seconds? If so, you should be find. I was running orthos for awhile and i had no problem grabbing and holding onto the NB for a long while. My NB is just warm.

@sniper
Playing BF2 at 200fps at full settings is nice :) This system is quite the upgrade from my old xp2000/9800 pro. Watch out for my RPK :)

ive not installed it since upgrading, but i always play the Project reality Mod for BF2 it make BF2 extremly realistic, try it if you havent already, ProjectReality 0.6

How do post a link with saying somthing else and not the address? you know like when you post a link Mrfatboy.

I have read a couple of threads out there with serveral people having problems with this board (knock on wood). I don't know if there was a bad batch, board is problematic, or they just don't know what they are doing. It's very strange. I am definately leaning toward some of the posters just did not know what they were doing.

@sniper
I will check out that project reality mod. I forgot about it. Now that I have this new system I will try it.

I post link with the "http oo" button on top of the window. Paste in your text. Then it asks you for link title. If you just press "enter" you get the basic link.

@roo,
warm is fine. You are good to go.

Yep, I have a 40mm fan sitting atop my NB HSF right now. I screwed bolts between the fins to hold it in place. I used 2 bolts placed at diagonal opposites rather than all 4. The bolts are different sizes as one sits where there is a slit in the fins - this is where the biggest is. It certainly feels solid enough. I just hope the bolts dont work loose or they'll land on the back of my gfx card!

I also used a 12v to 7v converter cable to reduce the fan whine. Temp is still much lower than before I added the fan as I can now leave my finger on the HSF without it burning.

I didn't really need the fan as these chips seem to run quite warm without any stability issues however, I reckon it's got to help in the long run though with this big overclock.

Update: I managed to borrow a digital thermometer on the NB and tried it out while running Orthos..quite cool ambient today and it showed 47 degrees. Reckon it's worth putting a fan on there?

check out that thread i gave you a couple of posts up. They told me anything under 50 degrees is good.
