lopri where are your tips located??? thanx in advance

edit....lol never mind im stupid :)

one more question on your last line you stated - Enhanced C1 State, Intel SpeedStep, when set to "Auto", will disallow Vcore change. does that mean you disabled it???

lopri,
what do you think of the P5W DH?

I have a retail E6600 that I got to 3.2GHz @ 1.45V stable and 3.3GHz@ 1.5V stable on a DS3.

Well, I blew up the DS3 due to a bad BETA BIOS flash mishap and I ordered the P5W DH. However, the more I read about it, the more I see it is plagued with problems-extremely slow boot times being one (which would REALLY piss me off on a $250 board. Should I have gotten another DS3?

I also have a Thermalright Ultra-120 - I LOVE it. People bash it, but I think they're high.

Brahmzy:

I'm quite cautious to even begin speculating on this, but the more and more I play with E6300 and E6600, I get a weird feeling. When I put my E6600 on P5W-DH, its behavior is quite erratic. Can't example those here but the difference is definitely there. Once I put the E6300 in, all the undesirable behaviors are pretty much gone and the performance becomes once again predictable.

1. (Very very carefully) It could be Intel that messed up with Rev.B Conroe?
2. Chipset handling 2MB L2 Cache and 4MB L2 Cache differently? (more likely)

Coming from Socket 939, this might sound like a BS, (since Toledo/Manchester, San Diego/Venice are just that, half the cache, and we didn't see any difference other than clock and power/heat. Or we could even say that the L2 cache size was transparent to the chipset.) But from my observation so far, there is definitely something else going on between Conroe and Allendale. Not only the L2 cache size, be it the chip's architecture or the way it communicates to the chipset (or the way chipset treats 2MB L2 vs 4MB L2).

Hope someone will eventually let us know what's going on..
For now, my first recommendation for E6600/E6700 is still P5W-DH. I haven't had any P965 board yet and from what I've heard they're still immature compared to 975X.

Sorry it wasn't really a clear-cut answer. Oh and I was dozing on my desk. zzz..

Good night all

I've ditched E6600. Couldn't stand the high Vcore to maintain 3.6GHz (1.57~1.6V set in BIOS) and high temperatures. E6700 is doing 3.6GHz @1.47V (E6600 wouldn't even boot at that voltage) and much more stable and smooth overall. Will run tests for people who requested. Sorry I was out of the chip in the mean time.

Currently stable and probably would-be my 24/7 setting (Until ASUS let me choose the God damn multies):

E6700 @3.6GHz (1.47V)
P5W-DH @360FSB (FSB:RAM=4:5) / BIOS 1101
DDR2-900 / 3-4-4-9 (2.2V)
Max Temp 64~66C (read via CoreTemp)

*All voltages are selected values in the BIOS.

Currently have a E6600 and P5W Deluxe to 365fsb at 3.29 ghz stable, but reach a wall at 370 fsb. I am using 1.550v (tried up to 1.575v) for Vcore and 1.65v for MCH and 1.20v for ICH. I am using Corsair DDR 800 CAS 5 Ram which shouldn't be a problem. I wondering if it is the MB or processor at this point. (I have disabled most options in MB such as Hypertransport 3, ect)

Also, what is a safe limit for voltage on the Conroe E6600? I really want to get to 3.6Ghz stable to be at a 1:1 fsb/ram ratio.

that is really interesting...Im at 360 fsb with a 1.475 (i think, somewhere near that) vcore and perfectally stable. Why such the high vcore for 370? I hit 370 on mine with the same vcore, but it wasnt prime95 stable.

After some communication with a person in-the-know, it's now quite obvious that there are problems with current motherboards, when dealing with 4MB Conroe chips. Basically if you want to go past 360~370FSB with this board, you will have to run FSB;Memory=1:1 or leave memory at "Auto". After that, the next wall will be either 400FSB (4MB L2 Chips) or 420~430FSB (2MB L2 Chips). The problem I had with the E6600 was it's extreme inconsistency, which I have no explanation for.

So at this (still) early stage of Core 2 Duo overclocking:

1. Go with E6400/E6300 with a decent P965 board. This is the best possible scenario, really.
3. Foreget about E6600
4. If you're dying to get 3.6GHz, you can either 1) Get an E6300/E6400 and OC the hell out of it, or 2) Get an E6700. I'm beginning to believe Intel actually bins E6700s from E6600s.
5. For No.4-1) You'll need a P965 board such as DS3, P5B-Deluxe, etc. For No.4-2) I'd say the P5W-DH is still the best bet.

I will try to answer as many questions as possible within my knowledge. I know many people are very frustrated over something that shoulodn't be frustrating. :(

Oh I'd love to but it's not mine.. As a matter of fact I should change the first rig in the sig. Sold my GTXs and awaiting G80/R600. ;)

Edit: Changed. :D
