MicroCenter strikes again. After the FREE eVga mobo fiasco, it keeps getting worse and worse. Why bother offering deals that exist 5 seconds? Idiots.

I've given up on Microcenter. They post some good deals (sometimes great like this one), but then never have anything in stock and won't backorder or give rainchecks. Everything else is usually overpriced.

After I ordered, I received a backorder notification that I would be charged when the product ships (within 30 days).

They fulfilled my order for the EVGA deal, I'm sure they'll fulfill this one as well.

Thanks OP:) I just picked up 2 this afternoon around 3:45 from B&M in Duluth, GA. The 2 of them plus 6% tax came to $339.98. They come in a small black cardboard box.

I called MC to check if they still had them around 11am. The clerk told me he was looking for them as we speak. I asked him to call me if he found them and to hold 2 aside for me. I was shocked when he agreed and even more amaze when he actually called me back told I could put on hold for 24 hours:)

The sticker on the box says 30 Day Warranty Return for Replacement ONLY if Defective. I asked the clerk about the warranty and he comfirmed the processor only had a 30 Day Warranty for replacement only, you can't get your money back:-(.

Now I don't care about the warranty because I have never used the same processor for more then 6 months. I plan to build two nice systems and sell one on ebay to pay for the other chip.

At stock speeds, an E6400 would perform similarly to or slightly better than an FX-60. However, with some overclocking (even a conservative OC to 2.6-3 GHz), the E6400 would pull way ahead of an FX-60.

That's what I wanted to know.
Still stuck with s939 but I think c2d is the way to go.
What mobo would you recommend for the 6400 w/o breaking my bank account?
Thanks

My friend has the Asus P5B P965 mobo and it easily produces a 2.8 GHz overclock on his E6300 with very little fine-tuning. I spent 20 minutes tuning it after a LAN and managed to get 2.8 GHz stable even with his DDR2-675 and the BIOS's lack of divider options for slower RAM. I'm sure it could do over 3 GHz with some more adjustments to the OC options. I would recommend the P5B if you're on a budget. For more serious overclocking, though, you are going to want an nVidia 680i based motherboard, such as the eVGA 680i or Asus P5N32.

How bout this Asus P5N-E SLI for $139 @ MC?

Or is it worth to spend another ~ $100 to get this...
Asus P5N32 E-SLI for $229 @ MC?

The extra money will buy you a better feature set and better overclocking, but even mainstream boards like the Asus P5B and Gigabyte GA 965P-DS3 will do over 3 GHz on an E6400 without too much trouble or fancy non-air cooling. I would recommend one of the two boards I just mentioned for most purposes. The Asus P5N-E uses the nVidia 650i chipset, and is not as proven as the P5B or DS3 (the P5N has memory compatibility issues as of now-http://anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2894&p=7), both of which use Intel's P965.

Ditto. I have never seen a CPU fail for no good reason, even when OC'ed if nothing else was wrong. I have a ... 300a OC'ed to 450 for the last ....six years. Never hiccuped. The CPU warranty might as well be 1 day, it aint gonna fail if it works out of the box (or plastic).

I haven't either, BUT by the time you add a decent fan and heatsink and factor in the significantly longer warranty for the retail version not to mention the delays typical of Micro Center what exactly is the savings??

I bought a Retail E4300 at Microcenter B&M for $162.99. I think the extra $3 is worth a heatsink and fan.

Pretty hot deal.

Retail gets you a stock cooler and case sticker too. I wouldn't recommend using a stock cooler with a C2D anyways, just put the difference into a top-notch air cooler for quieter cooling and better OC'ing.

P5N-E is a decent mobo, not as good in terms of effortless OC'ing as the AT review indicates. The MCP runs extremely hot with the stock cooler and the SB runs hot as well with no cooler at all. A lot of people resorted to using after-market coolers to get higher OCs but I didn't bother with it. Still a good board for the price. If you're definitely not going to SLI I'd get one of the Intel chipsets. If you're definitely going to SLI, I'd go with one of the 680i boards. If you're not sure, you've got the P5N-E. :)

I wasn't able to hit higher FSB speeds with my build limiting my overall OC. Pretty sure it was the NB but it could've easily been my memory since they've subsequently crapped out and awaiting RMA.

When you overclock do you stress test with Prime95? It's not truly overclocked unless it's returning ZERO errors- "Stable" means nothing.

I'd received a "back-order" notice email when I ordered that day, but haven't received a cancellation notice email - YET.

I received my OEM cpu a week ago. It seems to be used one. There is a mark of thermal thing cleaned. It it normal? Should I return it?
It says L628A901. No idea whether it can be a good overclocker.

Considering all the jerking around you all got from Microcenter you are only weeks away from the Intel price reduction on their processors. Why take used CPUs sold as new by Microcenter? It's dishonest.

Return it.

sounds like MC is charging you dudes 160 now and give ya the item when their price is cheaper after Intel price drops. Looks like MC really is taking advantage of the upcoming price drop now.

Not to be a spoiler, but with slightly better cpus and price cuts only 3-4 weeks out I think buying a core 2 cpu right now is probably not the best thing. It is a great price, but all things considered good things come to those who wait ;).
