I got one of the 200$ 19" widescreen westinghouse HDTV/Monitors from BB on black Friday
and it comes with a VGA cable and i have a 25$ BB gift card so i was wondering if the quality difference above VGA would be worth spending the gift card on..

Lack of DVI won't stop me from buying a cheap LCD, but a DVI cable from monoprice is pretty darn cheap.

I suppose it might help to mention i have a x800 GTO GFX card but im pretty sure most GFX cards are digital

but from what i found thru google it seems like DVI works better for LCD's whereas VGA works better for CRT's and since the westing house is a LCD looks like imma buy me a cable for xmas!

Ironically not the worst gift they've ever given me :p

I wouldn't get cables from BB. Why waste the credits there if you can get it much cheaper elsewhere.

Yeah, but you'd be better of spending the giftcard on something that's not so overpriced at Best Buy and buying the DVI cable from monoprice.com.

That is, if you expect to buy anything from Best Buy in the next year.

even still.... you could buy a game or something and get the cable online for like 15% of what it would cost at BB

Absolutely worth it, there is no picture shape or size adjustment with DVI, also a cripser image. But buy the cable online and use your gift card for something good.

reason for giftcard is buying cable online cost $$ and...

I=college student=no$$

but giftcard would equal no out of pocket cost(and i couldnt find anything else i wanted there for under 25$)

I'd say yes. I too got a 19" ws lcd from BB recently and it only came with a vga cable. I just got my DVI cable from newegg and am quite surprised by the differance.

I have a 19" Hanns G, probably the same panel as whatever youre looking at. 5 ms, 1440x900 etc etc.

There is absolutely no difference between vga and dvi.

wazzledoozle, I highly doubt that they are the same, I highly encourage everyone to run DVI

Do you speak from experience? I have switched between DVI and VGA multiple times and there is really no difference. The screen just auto-adjusts whenever it detects a resolution change while using VGA.

Use the giftcard to buy a DVD or something. I'd say toss out a few extra bucks and get the Rocky anthology. It's $37 at BB right now and I'd say it's worth $50 at least, hence a great deal.

If you're a college student, you can afford to be frugal. Just use the VGA cable until you can buy a DVI cable online for a couple of bucks. Buying a cable at BB is just tossing money down the drain. Worst case: find a friend that is going to BB and have them give you cash for the giftcard (minus 1-2 bucks for their time or something). Then you can afford a DVI cable AND a 6-pack of your favorite beer. It's a win-win situation!

I agree, I've bought cables from Monoprice.com and I will continue to do so. I suggest you do the same, I'm sure these same cables are sold in BB just marketed as RCA, Phillips etc. BTW don't let packaging trick you into thinking that some cables are digital, namely the majority of s-video cables that are sold at stores like BB say that they are digital, s-video is not digital.
