DVI -> VGA

I have a BFG 6800 OC video card (AGP).
It has a VGA and a DVI jack on it. Works fine with VGA.
It came with a DVI to VGA adapter that plugs into the DVI jack. When I use this, I get no signal. This should work right?

maybe my adapter is bad?

It should work, but you may have to turn on your extended desktop. Other wise give a reboot using the dvi->vga to see if you get anything displayed. Good option for dual monitors if you have 2 old crts.

Uh, then why aren't you just hooking it up to the VGA port?

It's not sending a signal to the DVI port because you only have 1 monitor

i am currently using the VGA port.
maybe i should have asked if i would get a better picture by using the dvi port 1st?

when i hook my 1 monitor up to my dvi port with the adapter, i get no signal.
if i didn't have another monitor hooked to the dvi port, then why the hell would i ask about not getting a signal? i may not know everything about computers, i've been working with computers for about 8 years but i'm not the f*cking dumb.

Hooking the monitor into the VGA port directly or into the other port with the DVI-I to VGA adapter should work the same. The second port is really not just a DVI port. It is a DVI-I port. Direct connection to a monitor is for DVI ones. With DVI-I port the analog VGA signals are there too. The adapter does no convserson at all. The adapter just allows access to the analog VGA lines that were there all along.

Here the the instructions from the instruction manual:

Plug the monitor cable into your card (VGA or DVI-to-VGA adapter for analog monitor or DVI directly for digital monitor) and reconnect the power cord to you system.

If connecting a second monitor to a card with a DVI connector, you may connect a digital monitor directly to the DVI connector or use the included DVI-to-VGA adapter for analog monitors.

A DVI to VGA isn't going to look any better than straight VGA. If you only need one VGA output, I'd say just use the straight VGA and don't worry about it.

Not if the monitor is VGA. The DVI port will do nothing for you.

All of the cards I have seen have a DVI-I connectors. These have both digital and analog VGA signals. The analog pins are only accessible if you use the DVI-I to VGA adapter.

If the DVI port only had digital signals then it would be labeled DVI-D. If you really had a DVI-D port then analog VGA from this port would not be possible,

I think he means "it will do nothing for you" in the sense that it wont be any better than regular VGA, not that it wont work.
