Interesting question. Just because it launches the Decrypter to burn the ISO, does Decrypter also remove the copy protection and region zoning when doing it.

Decrypter doesn't have to because DVD Shrink already did that when making the ISO

example1
example2

taken from Mr. Bass' guide here

Then why would you need the DVD Decrypter at all? You could do the burn with nero.

Whoa! It removes layer break when ripping DVD's?

That's a Godsend, as MOST ALL DVD players stall for a second or so during layer chnages....

But when burning to a blank dvd, it's one layers. Are you saying that when you backup a dual layer dvd it prevents this breakup during the layer changes (i guess when decoding) so it won't show up on the shrinked single layered dvd backup? I'm a little confused about this. I kinda thought burning an iso of the shrinked backup would make it easier to watch the backup on a computer, but don't understand why you can't just just the decoded shrunk files. Can you play an iso dvd in a home deck...without converting the iso back to the usual dvd files?

i like backing up to ISO if im not gonna burn it right away. that way i can have just one file sitting on my drive ready to be double clicked with no formatting worries.

THRILLHOv....but isn't the iso file the same size as a folder of a dvd backup when using dvdshrink (that's already shrinked)? If the iso is pretty much the same size as the folder made by dvdshrink, then are you saying you use iso simply because all you have to do is doubleclick to create the disc? Is this pretty much the same reason others in this thread use iso? Or, do you know of other reasons why they might be creating an iso. thanks

If he has an ISO he doesn't have to tie up the computer for 30-60 minutes (2x-1x) burning a disc right at that moment; he can do it later--let it burn while he sleeps or something.

I use ISO because I burn with DVD Decrypter. Also it is more foolproof. I had a brain fart one time where I burned the contents of the VIDEO_TS to a DVD (in the root, instead of making a VIDEO_TS folder) and wondered why it didn't play. Stupid mistake, but one that can't be made burning an ISO.

ISOs are cleaner to store on the hard drive, and if you watch the dvd without burning, you can mount the ISO with DAEMON Tools.

so no easy way to burn to 2 dvds still? i like to keep things at 100% keeping some commentaries etc. some movies easily go over one dvd that way. i've read that for movies with only 1 dvd worth u can keep menu on extras by compressing movie into still pictures on 2nd disc though.

Using the guides posted at Doom9 and at MrBass, I used DVD Decrypter, DVDFab, and Imgtool to do it onto 2 discs that work PERFECTLY, without any prob, though it takes a while. Mr Bass has a step-by-step guide. Great resource!!!

Forgive me if I have missed the point, but I have always split DVD's into two parts using DVDShrink's start-end feature. The first disc starts at the beginning and includes the first half of the chapters and the second starts in the middle and goes to the end. It is very easy, though you will lose the menus, of course.

Seems interesting, but long. Why would you do that when DVDFab does the menus too? Any benefits that I'm not seeing?

that works for those that don't want extras with working menus etc. i don't see the point in wasting a 2nd disc unless i preserve most everything. if its not worth two discs, its probably not worth backing up;)

Wondering if anyone can help. I've been using dvdshrink now and really like it and have had virtually no problems with my backups...until now. I've been trying to backup the U2 Elevation 2001 D2 and using "automatic" compression setting and it says the file is too big. I've never had this happen before. I've tried using custom settings and still get the same message. Has anyone tried to backup a dvd set to "automatic" compression and get this message (the current dvd size is too big). I don't want to waste a blank by trying to burn it anyway since i'm assuming this message probably means the backup won't work. thanks for any help

An iso is great for playing dvds off the computer using an imagedrive app from nero or alcohol 120

So if I want to make a back up of a LInkin Park DVD I can only choose full disk? It's a bit over 5 gigs so I would like to edit it down a little bit. I can't choose Re-author? I need to keep the menus on this one.

You can't "re-author" it, but you can manually tweak the compression used on every idividual element (menus, video clips, main feature, etc).

You can do this with DVDShrink too...Use the Reauthor option and set Frame Start and End timings..better still use the Chapter stops as references for a clean split..theres nothing you cannot do with DVDshrink..its quite simply the best DVD backup option

You can't split a dvd and keep the menus. Does anyone have a way to do this?

how do i create an .iso image using dvdshrink? i read the 1st post by mrbass, but i dont see that option in dvdshrink. any help would be appreciate, since it took me at least 1hr and 15minute to rip a dvd and burn it using dvdshrink on a sony 4x burner; i dont want to repete the process if i want to burn more than one copy of the same dvd.
