Wow... I didn't expect a new version this soon. DVD shrink is a great program! One of the best free programs (or non free for that matter) around!

I have to say, this is my favorite program to "backup" DVDs. Extremely easy to use and does a great job. Best of all , IT'S FREE!

anyone?
its rare...but every once in a while, there will be a dvd that shrink just cant seem to rip. i forget, but one of my dvd's did not want to be ripped by the program. but out of the 25-30 or so ive ripped so far, and it only stumbled on 1, i figure thats a pretty good ratio. besides, that was with an older version of shrink, probably can do that dvd now. but i still keep decrypter just in case.

Thx, this is great software (so far). Small download (808 mb), easy to use (it almost took as long to find my DVDRip of HP and the Chamber of Secrets and get it mounted as it took for DVDShrink to analyze the movie and add-ons).

Question; how much does compression affect quality? It looks as if this movie needs about 50% compression to fit on a single sided DVD.

Well i'm a noob to DVD burning, but I have burned 50 DVD's in the past 2 weeks since I got my DVD burner so I've learned a lot the past two weeks.

I use DVD decrypter for the occasional movie that, even if stripped, still will end up being compressed down to 50-60%, which many people say is a noticeable loss in quality. From what I read, rule of thumb is anything near and above 70% is generally unnoticeable, so that's the standard that I adopted without actually testing that theory.

I backed up casino today, and the movie itself is already 7+ gigs. If you want to get it to fit on one DVD you need to compress it almost 50%, which by the 70% standard is very unacceptable, so I use dvd decrypter + dvdfab (tutorial can be found on mrbass or doom9) to split it and create the movie on 2 dvd's instead.

I may be wrong here, but doesn't DVDDecryter use the Nero API to burn? I think you still need Nero installed, you just don't have to open it to burn with. I do love this software though, I even bought a copy of Dvd2One some time ago and just don't use it anymore.

I think someone did a screenshot comparison between quality of compression; it really gets noticeable below 65% on a good TV set. Probably obvious on a cheap TV below 60%.

I don't get it. I've used DVDShrink at greater than 60% compression, maybe 55% or so. I have an HDTV and watch the backups on progressive scan. They always look perfect to me. Why does it work so well for me but doesn't work for some people?

You can do this with DVDShrink too...Use the Reauthor option and set Frame Start and End timings..better still use the Chapter stops as references for a clean split..theres nothing you cannot do with DVDshrink..its quite simply the best DVD backup option

Thanks mrbass for all the news. Also, I really like the Linux tips and Windows freeware recommendations on your website. I've been using Linux for awhile, but found that you had some tips that I had never heard before and they were all in a nice, concise style on the webpage!

Good job.

:)

Image degradation might be more obvious to those who are using a projector. The larger image size makes imperfections more obvious. Could it also be the source material? Material which contains a lot of motion may not compress as well?

Do either DVDShrink or DVD Decrypter produce content that would allow me to modify (simple edits) the captured content before burning back to DVD?

I, too, thank you Mr. Bass for this great program! I've only been doing dvd backups for a little more than a month now and dvdshrink works great for me. I've been using dvddecrypter and then dvdshrink, but i think i may be overdoing it. I've noticed about half my dvds don't seem to require any compression, so i assume i can just use dvdshrink and omit dvddecrypter. I'm wondering about this new feature of dvdshrink.....can read and burn .iso images. Can someone tell me why i might would want this feature? What are the benefits of reading and burning .iso images? I'm not familiar with .iso images, other than i remember burning a cdr for one so that i could then have the pc run the program. thanks, robert
