I just recieved 50 of these disks. They burn successfully on my Toshiba 1X laptop drive. Have yet to try them on my 4x Sony Firewire DRU-510 drive. They show as longten 001, writeable at 1x-2x-4x. GP

Can somebody explain to me why certain drives won't record on certain brand discs and how a firmware update somehow makes those discs acceptable?

I just don't understand it conceptually, any more than if my tape deck would only record on Maxell tapes but not Sony. It just seems wierd to me. Has the drive manufaturer just determined that only discs A, B and C are worthy of being recorded onto while D, E and F are not?

Question for folks using NEC-1300A drives:

If you're getting successful burns, are the discs you have YI JHAN or LONGTEN?

It seems the problems might be with the YI JHAN discs.

I just talked to a Shop4Tech guy and he said I can either return them for refund or exchange. He suggested the Matrix ones seem to be working for more different brands of drives (a little more expensive).

(By the way Herrie's 1.08v2 firmware does great with the bitsetting feature. My DVD+Rs and DVD+RWs will now work in standalones that wouldn't take 'em before.)

I have a 1300A, and all the media I have gotten from them has been LONGTEN001. I placed another order today for some more, so I will be able to check out this YI JHAN / LONGTEN debacle. I have ordered 4 times from them, and each time the media I have gotten has been LONGTEN. I will let you all know what I get with this shipment.

I've just got my disks and they are the YI JHAN discs. Just burnt 2 DVD's no problem at all on my NEC-1300A @ 4x with Herries 1.08v2 firmware. Very happy for the price I paid for them.

I got the longten001 discs and even though I've had some "success" burning them, they are FULL of errors.

Just because you get through the burning process does NOT mean that you have no problems.

Everybody who's trusting their data to these discs should download DVDInfoPro and run the error check. You may be surprised at the results.

I think these discs are TERRIBLE and if anybody wants to buy 40 of them from me, you're welcome to them.

by using the Verify feature in DVD Decrypter, am I basically checking for errors as one would with DVDInfoPro?

My burns have been no problem on the ND-1300A...it's when I verify the disc that it finds some bad sectors...

Was burning some today on my Pioneer 105, and out of the 6 I did, 1 failed to verify.

What speed are you burning at with the 105?

Looks like they dropped the price again. $39 for 100 pack. Use the current coupon and it drops down the $35.10 free shipping.

You want to shrink to a folder on your hdd. A friend of mine had the same question and was ripping his discs to an .ISO file. When the encoding is complete, open up Nero. Under the question: "Which recorder would you like to use?", select the tab that has the name of your DVD burner drive follow by a "[DVD]". Then, under "What would you like to burn?", choose DVD-Video files. This should take you to another screen where you can add the folder of your ripped dvd. Click add, highlight the folder you want to be burned, click add again, then finished. Click Next and it will bring you to the last window where you can finally click on burn. BTW, those of you with the Yi Jhan discs that have the NEC 1300A and are getting "Illegal Media" from Nero can flash to the official 1.09 firmware. They won't work with the official 1.08 firmware like some people on this thread had suggested. I just flashed to 1.09 a few minutes ago and Nero can finally recognize them at 4x.

Nice little Nero tutorial Jorman. I always forget to select the DVD burner myself
I received 100 of these Sonic DVD-R's today and they are Yi Jhan 001's. I'll test them out
on a Lite-On 811s 8x and a Pioneer 105A 4x and report back (I donated my NEC-1300A to a friend - one RMA and too many problems with that crappy burner). Kinda rough edges on these DVD's :disgust:

Update: Pioneer 105A burns reliably at 4X and Lite-On 811s at 2X. I'm going to burn at 2X on both burners and always use Nero's validate function just to be sure

I am using dvdinfo to validate the LONGTEN disc's after burn, and they check out fine in my NEC, Sony, and Optorite drives. I really hope they send me some of the other discs that they seem to have switched to, as I want to see whats up with them. All the LONGTEN discs that I have ever used, be it from Shop4Tech or anywhere else that I have ordered from, I have had zero issues with.

That's really interesting. On my NEC 1300A with 1.0A firmware mine are full of errors and they're LONGTENs.

I'll also say that mine do NOT have the physical blemishes that others have reported. Mine look fine, they don't have any discolorations or splotches or anything, but burning at 2x or 4x they come up with tons of errors. All I know is that I don't feel like I can trust my data to these. Live and learn I guess.

i havnt got mine yet.. but wat will matter to me is that they burn successfully.. and that they play flawlessly on standalone DVD players.. full of errors or not.. if they play well on XBOX, PS2, DVD Players.. and let me re-copy the copy using the DVD Burner.. then its good media for me.. others are just harder to satisfy i guess.. but thats why they have those $2 a piece DVD-rs for u guys :)

I got mine yesterday (didn't check the front door until a few minutes ago), and they're working perfectly on my machine (burned @ 4x using the Emprex DVD burner on sale at Fry's). I'll burn a movie to it later and test it out.

Unfortunately, I don't have much hope for my laptop drive, as it hates the Ritek G04 and CMI (or whatever Memorex uses) at any speeds.

The dyes used in different media are made by different companies, each with different formulations as they improve the stability of their dye. There are small, subtle, differences in the write strategy, which must be hardcoded into the firmware.

No it does not. Verify merely reads the files back to see if they match the original. Some errors are corrected in the process and not shown up. The DVDInfo scan uses the drive's C2 Error reading function (which not all drives support) so it will even pick up correctable errors.

I just got in my 2nd 100 from Shop4Tech. The first spindle was Longten 001, this spindle has a blank media ID. More later, testing now....

Bad, bad, bad, bad. What more can I say. I attempted to write at 4x in my Pioneer 106, which writes to almost anything, and errored out during the burn at 4x. So I tried again at 2x, same result. I then tried using my BTC 1008, and got a sucessful burn. But DVDInfoPro found beaucoup errors when I attempted to read it back.

I just applied for an RMA at the Shop4Tech web site.

DvdInfoPro, DVDIdentifier, and DVDDecryptor all agree that there is no media ID on these discs.
