Well i got my NEC 3500 A this afternoon..

So far so good.. Burn a full 4.7GB in about 9:32 seconds.. ( Sound right? )

Read speeds are a HELL of a lot better than my lite on..I do have a couple DVD's filled with MP3 backups, and the NEC couldn't read them.. :(

I would love to take advantage of 16x but we all know that's not anytime soon....

I know there is no 12x media available..

ANY 8x media capable of handling that type of speed?

TY?

Ritek?

Where to buy?

Thanks!

:D

EDIT: Found some at Meritline

Going to buy a 25 pack for 23 and see what happens..

:Q

Thing is that it depends on your burner and its firmware. You can check the recommended media on Plextor's site for the 8x media that writes at 12x on the PX-712(S)A iirc it's a short list Also remember that the burner you bought has been out less than a week or so in the US so you might have to be a little more patient. Did you check the NEC site for recommended media?

True,

But I would have thought that some of the TY media (8x) was capable of 12x on most drives...

NEC doesn't appear to have ANY info on the 3500..

The TY Media is rated at 8x, but supposedly it'll do 12x. I ordered the Plextor Sata burner from the Egg, and am expecting it Monday or Tuesday. I also ordered some discs from plextor,( the 1's that are supposed to run 12x), and will LYK how they do when they show.

Sounds good,

BUMP!

I find it hard to believe with all the different burners, there is not capable, let alone reliable media..

Dunno if you're backing up important data, but Tom's Hardware said you should never write anything critical at faster than 4x. Apparantly there's just too much chance for error ... or at least it writes overall lower quality (less reliable redundancy of the pits, etc.)

I partially believe that.. But if its QUALITY disc, and its rate at a certain speed, i expect it too.. .

But I would still try several disc and check the quality and go from there..

It depends on the burner as well. AT will be posting a new review tomorrow of the latest NEC and Pioneer drives. From what I've read about the Pioneer, its burn quality is excellent at 8X. I would say that with quality media and a good burner, high speed burning should be fine. It seems as though 12X and 16X burning have a very minimal effect on burn times, so I would probably stick to 8X just to be safe.

welll 12X and 16X would probable be as having a cd-RW derive that burns 32X and up, wont really affect the time.. My 24X liteon still burns cds plenty fast for me. As long as a DVD doesnt take 15 minutes or over for me Im all good. Allthough i might be able to budge that number a bit when it comes to dual layer DVDS though :cookie:

The Riteks might work at the speeds you want but make sure you get the media from choice locations like Newegg. I had a whole bunch of almost 40 Riteks DVDs thrown cause all of them turned out to be coasters. I bought them at the cheap ass merit-line store & whose customer service is aweful.

This might help you. I have the Lite-On 1213-S which I bought by accident thinking it was a DL burner. Anyway, yesterday a hacked Sony DRU710A firmware was made avilable and I subsequently updated the Lite-On with it. Works like a charm. I can now in theory burn at 16x and 2.4x DL. :)

The Sony Drive recommends the following DVD's etc so it might be a good place to start. :

Firmware revision: BY01
Drive type: SOHW-1633S
File name: SONY_DRU_710A_BY01.BIN

Thanks for the Info..

NEC doing some good speeds..

TY 8x and it looks like the "Prodisc R04" will do 16x..

Can't seem to find them with that R04 code though..

Don't know where the best place to buy some TY DVD's are either...

The nice thing though, 16x only took 5:35...

:D

With minimal errors it seemed..

I just ordered some TY's at Rima.com at the recommendation of guys on another msg board. They've got regular and inkjet printable 8x DVDs -- those 8x printables are kinda hard to find.

Well read speeds are a lot better than my lite on..

4.25GB in 4:51

:D

Write times seem a little high, about 9:30

Eager for 12 and 16x

Also found out my Memorex 8x -R's are Ritek media..

Yup, No errors :) Tho I only burned 2.8 gigs tho, but it sure is smooth.
Edit; I checked the new disks I got from Plextor today, and Plex Manager says they are TY disks that write 12x.
