DVD Burner

I'm torn between theses burners:

- Samsung SH-S182M/BEBN
- LG GSA-H22N
- LiteOn LH-18A1P
- Pioneer DVR-111D

They're all pretty much the same price, what's your opinion?

Get the cheapest one.

LG GSA-H22N burns Verbatim 16X +R (MCC004) really well so if you have those disks lying around, grab the LG.

Yes BenQ are the best and everyone knows it but they are hard to find but they quit making DVD Burners and they are hard to find. I was torn between the Samsung and the LiteOn. I ended getting the Samsung and i have been happy with it. The only thing i don't like is you have no indication when its burning or reading because the LED does not change color.

You should be able to tell if it's burning or reading because you're the one telling it what to do...

If you look over on the CDF or AD forums (am I allowed to link? or just leave it an acronym?) you would find a lot of advice regarding burners.

For the most part it depends on whether you have a specific task that the burners will be doing and especially what kind of media you will be using.

I'm no pro in this field, but I know the one's you listed all seem to be some of the best one's out there. The liteon can be flashed to a 20A1P.

If you can find the BenQ DW1650, then you might want to try that. There are a lot of people who consider it to be the best. Out of the one's you listed, they would all be argued by some to be the best.

Oh, but that's only if the Samsung performs the same as or better than the SH-S182D (I don't know how the two relate, whether it's just a firmware update or something).

Maybe do some googling for the "best dvd burner" and find some polls on various forums and discussion about them. Maybe then post on those forums and tell them what media you're using, etc, and be able to get a better answer.

Well duhhhhhhhhhh....but if you didn't know this when you burn a dvd it does both burning and reading in the same session.

Yeah, if you only use one drive. If that's the case, it ejects the original disk and prompts you for a blank disk after it's done reading. IMHO, it's pretty hard to forget which phase of the burn it's currently in.

I already posted the same thing on CDF, but no one really replied to my thread. I guess for my use (backing up movies and my personal backups) I won't see much difference between them all...

I just picked up an LG H22N last week to replace my 'not working properly' Lite-On SHW160P6S. I practically do no burning at all (burned 1 memtest disk in past year), so I can't speak for it's burning capabilities. On the other hand, someone in the house also just got the exact same drive, and burning like crazy with no problems. As a DVD movie player, it works great. Only negative I have is that it's somewhat loud compared to the Lite-On, and it appears to vibrate more. Never have I heard louder case panel vibration when it spins slowly, which goes away if I push down lightly on any panel. Lastly, two of my DVD movies play pretty loud (vibration think they're unbalanced?), so I'm not sure who to blame there; think Lite-on and Samsung have their own anti-vibration tech. Still, most of these problems can probably be blamed by my case (weird panel design/mounting). Speaking for LG's other drives that I have used at my old work place burning quite a few DVD/CDs, there were very few coasters, and they rarely had read issues. LG is probably the only brand I'd trust right now.

On that note, try to avoid Lite-On, their support sucks. My first drive SHW1635 died within 2 months, and scratched a few of my discs (concentric circles...). They sent me an OEM replacement for a retail drive, which did not allow for firmware to be updated thanks to their 'idiot proofing' of firmwares, and as insult to injury, it was the wrong colour (white, I have black case). Then it took 3 months for them to send out a replacement bezel which turned out to be a freaking sticker. On calling for support for the non-updatable firmware (drive wouldn't recognize most of my DVD collection), they stopped responding after I confirmed that it wasn't my fault. Oh, and their support takes about 1 week to reply. Just don't get Lite-On...

Thank you all for the advice, I went for the 111D!

I head the LG was really loud. I've had a LiteOn burner before and support was a nightmare. The Samsung looked great but I read that ripping wasn't as fast as other drives (I will be doing a lot of that).
