Blacks have more melanin and are therefore better at handling UV rays, but I don't what that has to do with playing in the heat. It's probably true that they convert more heat from light.

Bingo! Someone gets it!

So why does that make Dusty Baker an idiot? It's not his fault he can say that and "get away with it".

Who said anything about Dusty being an idiot? And noone said it was his fault, in fact, my comment should easily be recognized as an attack on the PC loving media.

IMHO, someone who says whatever they want "because they can get away with it" = idiot.

I could get away with calling everyone on the board a ghey punk. Only thing I'd succeed at doing if I did that....would be making myself look like an idiot. But hey, I could get away with it......

He said it because that's what he thinks not because he knows he can get away with it. The people that think it's not ok for others to say it are the ones who are idiots.

Who's to say someone isn't offended by it? I sure as heck can't speak for everyone. Can you? Can he? Can anyone?

Maybe I've just spent too much time in a corporate environment where anything you say, can (and usually will) be considered offensive by someone, somewhere, that happened to over hear, read an email over someone's shoulder, or was just in general eavesdropping on my/your comments.

Case in point:

In my previous job, a friend of mine was having a conversation about homosexuals with one of his co-workers via email. The other person accidentally COPIED the email in the notes of a customers wireless account. My friend, who is a devout christian has very strong beliefs regarding this subject, and I believe he had some strong comments about it. Never the less, he was fired over his opinion. The person that posted the mess? She got a week of unpaid leave.

Dusty Baker is an idiot for this reason: Being somewhat of a "celebrity" so to speak, anything he says is and always be closely scrutinized by the media and the public. Regardless of his intent on the comments, wether they were factual or ficticious, wether he was serious or making a joke. This is not news to him. Knowing this, he should know to be mindfull of his comments.

Is it really that bad of a comment? Probably not. Is he racist because of it? Certainly no. Could someone go way off the deep end and start talking about him eluding to slavery and the such? You'd be an idiot to not think so.....

And today on ATOT I learned the difference between racial and racist.

That's great codeyf.

Ah I got that in before your last post so let me amend:

Dusty Baker is an idiot for not being aware that other idiots will think he's a racist? Maybe. But even if the Cubs fire him after he's done coaching the All-Star game, they will become the idiots and us and Dusty will know better.

Looks like yo da Idiot boy! Looks like everyone agrees with Dusty Baker..... Dusty Baker says you been PWNED!!!

That's because everyone here at ATOT, is of MUCH higher intelligence than the majority of the public. With the exception of the few that create an account just to tell someone they were "PWNED".

For people like you, there is a line repeated many times:

LURK MORE, POST LESS!

Further example of how the media blows stuff like this out of proportion, I pulled this from ESPN, where the headline was:

Baker puts racial spin on playing in the heat

What's wrong with that headline? Doesn't it describe exactly what he did?

there's nothing wrong with that. as a white person, you should be able to comments about your own "race"/ethnicity without people condemning you for it. dusty baker, a black man, makes a comment about minorities (maybe non-black minorities would be offended), so what? jeff foxworthy ridicules rednecks all the time, everybody laughs! just laugh, and lighten up! there are some things in this world that are just not in good taste and some which are, and you've got to figure out which they are.

That was probably very poorly phrased and timed, but that's probably it. Now, if he said "haha dumb crackers can't take the heat" or something like that, that'd be racist and I'd call him an idiot.

Hey, I've got no prob with what he said. But someone might. I'm sure there are people that are offended by what Foxworthy has to say as well. I'm asian, and lets say hypothetically I was someone of importance (i said hypothetically). Let say a famous asian chef. During an interview, I say, "well you know, I'm asian, so I eat a lot of rice."

Is it statistically true that asians eat rice? Yes. Are they the only race that eats rice? Of course not. Does it make me racist? Hell no. Is it possible that I could cause an uproar in the asian community by implying the sterotype that all asians eat rice? Certainly.

Do all latino's and ethinic people perform better in heat? Don't think so. Do people with darker skin never get sunburn? No.

Is it at all possible to have a (somewhat) intelligent conversation with ATOT'ers? Some, most definitely yes. Majority? No way.

jesus christ, it's an opinion, and we all have some. here we are promoting free speech on this message board and then as soon as someone says a questionable remark on public TV it's taboo.
