From what I've read, this board is fussy with certain video cards. I think it has a problem with ATI. Does anyone know if it will accept a Voodoo 3?

problems with ATI? I am typing this message on a Radeon LE(183/183) and Duron 850 at 1.85V penciled in with ECS K7S5A. Tried to overclock it to like 1050Mhz on 124FSB using the unofficial bios, but the chip crapped out. Even at such high voltage unoverclocked, the temps are around 123F consistantly and this windows 2000 machine has been up for like 3 weeks without reboot(unless I update drivers). This is by far the most stable board I have. Definitely a plus for people don't overclock.

I think that a lot of the problems people are having are from running it at 133/133 using a small case with no air circulations and ultra high speed athlons with like 250-300W PS. just not enough juice for the AGP and CPU at the same time, and the CPU heats up fast. Use 128MB of AGP aperture to reduce AGP problems too. Don't shadow your BIOS.

a 300W PS should be fine for up to a 1.2Ghz Duron or 1Ghz Athlon original. anything more than that, you are better off using a higher grade PS. ( most of the 300W PS don't even do 230W at peak! so watch the current ratings. I think that the athlons need a combined 160W on the 5V and 12V rails...or something like that, too be stable and most of the 300W PS don't cut it)

ok i finally got in on this deal...thanks to hot deals i just spent $166.10 for that EverCase E4252WEFA, boxed Duron 950mhz and this ECS board 😀

I have used a 8500, AIW 8500DV, AIW Radeon DDR and a Radeon LE in these. Not one single problem, ever.

Thanks for the heads up on this! I kept seeing the $99 and was thinking about another bundle, but the $89, which is $96 shipped for me, is definitely worth it!

I just picked this up. Thanks.

It feels weird tho'. This is the first time I've bought a mobo/cpu, and I didn't even really do any of my own research/reviewing. I'm mainly purchasing it cuz of price and the generally positive feedback here.

I've bought over 10 of these and sold them as overclocked combo's jumped the voltage on the 950 durons up to 1.85 run the FSB at 133, which gives 1267 mhz no problems. I just ordered 5 more today.

tedinde1: did you buy this particular combo? did you get a new fan or just use the fan it came with and overclocked it? TIA

I like the price but wouldn't the 1000 mhz Duron better ( Morgan core with less power consumption=less heat, better performance ). The price at newegg is not a whole lot more if Newegg combines S&H - Do they ?

I agree that the OCworkbench ECS forum is a great resource for K7S5A owner's. I spent a lot of time on that forum before buying my K7S5A.

Here's another useful K7S5A website:

K7S5A Problem Fix Guide

And there is also a nice forum on this same site:

K7S5A Forum

I recently built a system with the K7S5A and I've been very happy with it. I would recommend that buyers avoid pairing this board with a PCI based video card since many report problems with "crackling" sound.

Also, don't buy a 1.4 Ghz T-bird with the K7S5A since this combination can be troublesome.

<< For anyone who buys this board, THIS SITE is a gift from god.
Go to the message forum and select "ECS". There's a FAQ and LOTS of threads of ANY possible problem.
BTW: This is my THIRD ECS board that I have bought in the last 3 months (SIS chipset kicks the crap out of that flaky VIA - I'll never go back) and I have had no problems yet.

HEY TELINDE!!!
I have the same questions as JonnyJack.

Can you help us out here? Did 10/10 overclock to 1267?
What heatsink are you using?

Anyone else try this?

Thanks,
Pigseye

Hi, anyone know how the 950 duron compares to the 950 Athlon? Newegg has the Athlon (OEM) and the MB seperately? What are the benefits/negatives of getting Duron and MB combo, vs Newegg Athlon and MB? thanks......

Hi, here are a few answers to some of the questions

1. Clock speed wise, Duron is no comparison to Athlon Thunderbird due to its smaller L2 cache. Duron is designed by AMD to compete with Intel Celeron and wins hands down, not with its own Thunderbird. However, Duron 950 runs lower temperature than Thunderbird 950, meaning you can get by with the AMD supplied HSF, and uses less power. I'm currently running this combo using 250W PS without any problem.

2. IMHO, ECS K7S5A is not designed for overclocking at all, so don't waste time doing it. Also, overclocking will void your AMD warranty, and you'll definitely need a very powerful HSF. It is basically a low cost alternative for people who want to upgrade to the socket A platform. You can still use your PC100/133 SDR SDRAM without much performance penalty. Later on, you can upgrade to DDR SDRAM and Athlon XP with the same board. If you are upgrading from socket 370 or super socket 7 platform, you'll be amazed by the performance jump. If you have experienced VIA KT266A motherboards, this combo is not for you.

3. Duron with Morgan core (1 Ghz and above) has incorporated SSE just like XP. If you do a lot of video encoding stuff, like burning your own video CDs, you'll definitely benefit from it. But then, you should probably get an Athlon XP instead of Duron.

4. You can get a much better deal by buying a combo, but make sure you know what you are getting into. Fry's combo deals are hard to beat, but their component's individual price is not attractive at all.

5. Overall, this is a great deal for a low cost upgrade, and I highly reommend it for people using their computers for general purpose. If history is any indication, Outpost.com will probably offer Duron 1 Ghz with the same motherboard for $89 in a month and a half if you are willing to wait. Hope these help, just my two cents.

Beware,
This board is not an easy overclocker. Any voltage adjustments have to be done via the CPU bridges or other nasty things that in no way involve Jumpers and or the BIOS. I have one of these with a T-bird 1.0 Ghz and it works great, but if you are going to buy this board, I would get either an XP, Duron or T-bird @ 1.0Ghz or less. There is a HACKED Bios out there that gives you a couple extra FSB options, but they are very limited. In short it's a great value, but get the most processor you can, because overclocking is not a given with this MOBO.

Just something to think about.

Regards,
Keith

<< Hi, here are a few answers to some of the questions >>

Thanks for the help, you make a lot of sense....🙂 What I was thinking of doing was building a system for a friend to replace an aging computer with a PII 333,
and a mb with specs from around the time when a pII 333 was top of the line....😉

Please PM me if you have info or youfr 2cents worth also ......thanks

Received this yesterday from Outpost. Everything works just fine with my ATI AIW Radeon.
BTW I also purchased: Soyo SY-2059 P4 Mid-Tower Case w/ 300W Power Supply from outpost

Here's the order breakdown:

Outpost # 3211101 Qty: 1

The power supply handled the high heat pumpin' Duron with no problems (CPU temp has not exceed 101 degrees F)

What's that rev # of the board out there guys?????

I see on ECS's site, that 1.0/1.1 DID NOT SUPPORT THE XP!

I want to get this board and 950 and then upgrade to a 1600/1700 once they fall below $90 or so....

But if this isn't the newest rev of boards from Outpost, then i'm stuck!

Anyone who has gotten it care to divulge the version # of the PCB itself on the motherboard? Thanks!

<< how would this setup perform as a server? Would the onboard LAN be acceptable? >>

Works great... my headless file server is on 24/7... it's been running Win2K SP2 non-stop for the past month. The onboard LAN is no different than any other Linksys, DLink, etc. 10/100 card.
