Duron 950MHz Boxed CPU w/ECS K7S5A Motherboard $89 + SHP At Outpost.com

isht...I just paid $120 for this two weeks ago from Tiger Direct....I should have known better than to go through them.

so does this have on board sound since it has this audio codec thing? i never bought a board with sound before so i'm not sure...

also if it does have onboard sound does it have a mini jack for speakers on it or what? sorry for these stupid questions, haven't built a computer in awhile...just check my specs in my sig...haha

TIA

For anyone who buys this board, THIS SITE is a gift from god.
Go to the message forum and select "ECS". There's a FAQ and LOTS of threads of ANY possible problem.
BTW: This is my THIRD ECS board that I have bought in the last 3 months (SIS chipset kicks the crap out of that flaky VIA - I'll never go back) and I have had no problems yet.

It does have onboard audio and LAN. The onboard audio has jacks for Microphone, Line in, and Speaker/headphones out. Along with a game port right above it. All these ports are below the COM and LPT ports.

I'm running the same board with a 1Ghz Duron. Runs great. Easy install. I'll probably pick up another one for the wife's machine. Will support an easy upgrade to an Athlon 1800+ when they come down in price.

FYI, you get the following from newegg.com:
K7S5A $52
AMD DURON 950MHz 200MHz FSB SOCKET A PGA PROCESSOR $41 or $10 more for 1GHz
Total: $93
When I can avoid getting things from Fry's, I am wiling to pay a few more $'s.

Don't forget a fan and memory:
I'm running the Volcano 5 with no problems $7.
or, I might suggest the Speeze SuperRock 5T208B1H3T Ball bearing Fan $12 if you want to upgrade to an Athlon later.
I believe KINGSTON KVR133X64C3/256 VALUERAM 256MB PC133 - OEM will work with this MB/CPU $66

I've nothing but good to say about newegg so far.

Sorry this sounds like a commercial. Just wanting to share a good experience with others. I got leads to most of my equipment from Anandtech. Thanks!

My 2 cents,
Timis

I agree newegg ROCKS~! 😛

I've bought lot of times from newegg. Everything, including refurbed mobos, have worked A-OK. No egg on my face! I live a few miles from their warehouse. Now if only they'd do 'Will Call'!!!! Not that their shipping is outrageous, of course. Just my need for instant gratification speaking!🙂

Just want to point out that the CPU you get from OutPost.com is the retail box, so it comes with fan/heatsink. If you go with Newegg, you will need to buy it seperately. But you can pick up a Cooler Master one for $4, and it's quiet yet provides sufficient cooling for the Duron. I have a Cooler Master fan/heatsink with a heat pipe, works grgeat on my XP1800+, but that thing is loud!

<< is the retail fan good enough if i don't overclock? and also does the m/b report cpu temps? >>

Yes and yes.

Thanks shamu, I hadn't noticed that. Good point.

now im really tempted to buy this setup. Have been doing some research at several different forums and it seems this board can be finicky. But at this price im willing to take a chance. So hopefully I will make the leap from PII 350 to a Duron 950 😱

I have bought and installed 8 ECS K7S5A mobos on various systems for my friends and family, and it's the only MB I use with them. Its great because it has everything already on board except a modem and video. I used to have an Abit kt133-raid mobo, and it always freaking locked up. The K7S5A is about 1/3 the price, and provides much better features and performance. It's easy to upgrade too. You can start out with a duron and sdram like me, and then upgrade as you find good deals. It supporst both DDR and SD ram. AS for the duron, you're getting it for $30, which is a pretty good deal.

Can anyone confirm that Outpost.com does not ship out used/returned motherboards as new?

I know that at Fry's they will put the returns back out on the floor for sale with a sticker saying "checked out and okay".

Now that Outpost is affiliated with Fry's, do they do the same thing with their web orders??

From a performance point of view, it's better to spend 10 more bux to get the ECS board and Duron 1Ghz separately. i believe that they are 60 shipped and 50 shipped ...so 110 for both....the 1Ghz Duron is morgan core and performs better...
