why do people write dates like this:

5/5/05
Or, sometimes even 05/05/05

This has bugged me for 5 years...
Why can't July 4 this year simply be 7/4/5?

Sure, there's a 2 digit field in many programs (I thought we got rid of that after 1999)
But, when writing the date, I can see no reason to squeeze in the 0. Habit?
If, because of the millenium bug, you won't feel comfortable unless you write out the entire 7/4/2005, then fine. I can live with that. But, what's the difference between using 5 and using 05?

I encourage all of you to drop the use of the 0 in the year until the year 2010.

It's done in regulated professions to prevent the doctoring of dates. It'd be easy to slide a "1" in front of a date without a "0" to change it.

well, you have 1998 1965 and 1943, so you wouldn't write 8, 5, and 3... it's just stuck so that's the way it is, just like tennis players only eat half a banana. DON'T GO OUT TRYING TO CHANGE THE WORLD!

Similiar reasoning is why a lot of checks have leading *'s before the dollar amount.

He's only referring to when the third digit of the year is a 0.

And like I said, its all about convention. How many things do we do in a day that don't really make sense, just because someone decided that's how it was going to be done?

YYYY/DD/MM

And, given the reason a few posts above: to prevent doctoring the dates,
what's to prevent someone to change the date
March 20, 2005

From 03/20/05
to
2003/20/05??
Like I said... I'll agree for safety/security reasons IF you're going to use the 4 digit year. But, there's no point to using a 2 digit year. Besides, what's someone going to change the year to ... 2015 by squeezing a 1 before the 5 if I don't write 05? Or maybe they'd like to change it to the year 2051?! Or, 1951?

Dates can be just as easily doctored, unless the complete date is written out (like her has done)

So, hopefully, we can agree that it's just because of convention.

Well, I urge you, fellow ATOTers... throw convention out the window and drop the 0. (for 4 2/3 more years)
