Wow the HBO stream looked horrible. I decided to watch on the projector screen(1080p 120") and it was truly awful. I want to shell out for the blu ray when it comes time just to get mad again lol. I wish I had access to the bitrate data on that one sheesh.

HBO's bitrates have long been problematic. Remember the GOT "The Long Night" incident?

Wow yes that was bad as well. This was almost comically bad on a large screen though. I was borderline embarrassed having guests over to watch it as I have the hot setup in my group of friends.

Well, duh. The novel is everything, so go read it. Or, go hear it. I found the audiobooks a fun reprise. That said, "extremely accurate" is pretty high praise, at least from a nerd perspective.
Still want to see, but life is getting in the way atm.

Extremely accurate is up for debate. They made some curious omissions from the story and left other things unexplained. I wonder if the possibility of not making a part 2 forced them to try to make a more standalone film by omitting some background details?

The Lynch version is a more complete story, but it is a BAD movie. This is an incomplete story in an amazing movie experience with a lot of nice details.

I thought it was pretty good.

Bardem makes a great Stilgar, loved Rebecca Ferguson, and the actor who played Jamis, Babs Olusanmokun, stood out to me. I feel like they did the Sardaukar right, also like that worms seem more present and aggressive, more of a threat. Place is supposed to be crazy dangerous, felt like that was stressed more than in Lynch's movie.

Good call breaking it up into halves, let's go Part 2

my only gripe is Aquaman slicing thru the Sardaukar like they didnt have shields.
where's the delay in hitting the shields and drawing blood?

Here are just the scenes the Dune subreddit has figured out were cut from the movie. There must be more too. Someone shake some sense into Denis so they release an Extended Cut

  • Duncan arriving in Arrakis and finding the Fremen;
  • the extended version of the Gom Jabbar scene;
  • the banquet scene;
  • a conversation between Thufir and Paul after the hunter-seeker scene;
  • a conversation between Paul and Dr. Yueh. Yueh gives an OC Bible to Paul;
  • Yueh and Jessica talking about Wanna and Yueh cries;
  • Piter torturing a prisoner. Rabban is in the scene;
  • Piter + Thufir scene;
  • Piter drinking sapho juice;
  • More images of the Harkonnens;
  • Jessica training Paul at Kynes base;
  • And, of course, THE BALISET.

Told me wife no Dune date night until she read the book haha. She compromised & is listening to the audiobook now. Maybe I'll make her watch Lynch's version as a prerequisite lol:

While I would love to see all those thing, I think the only thing that is really needed is a couple of the Yueh scenes to get more clarity on his motivations.

yeah... him doing that was wtf convenient plot moving device.

and how does a doctor have the authorization to do those things?
and how does no one notice?!

The original one was boring.

My wife and I just watched the remake tonight, and it was boring. If they have some kind of sequel to the new one, I doubt I would watch it.

Maybe I'm just not a "Dune dude".

Just finished watching Dune and was surprised at how sparse the film felt despite its length. Some of the deleted scenes you listed would've been useful.

For anybody that did not see Dune or has not rewatched it since it first came out, it is on HBOMax again.

Gonna give it another whirl. Watched it opening week in the theater.

I try but I keep falling asleep. Just like I did in 1984 with the other version.

I might have to revisit the Dune book, but iirc, there is a lot of internal dialogue, even entire pages of reverie. That's a tough thing to adapt to a screenplay.

My brother in law watched it. Has not read the book.

Said it was good, though visually excellent. He thought the story felt glossed over at times - he smartly decided to stop and google some things to fill in some of the gaps Denis left out so he could include longer than necessary dramatic shots of Paul's flowing hair.

It took me 3 tries, but I finally finished it tonight. Thoughts:

1. Absolutely breathtakingly beautiful movie. Reminded me of Oblivion. Just fantastic visuals.

2. Dune is a hard book to turn into a movie because there's so much depth & introspection. It's hard to pack that into a single movie & capture the vibe of the book.

3. I felt like it was told from a distance. Like, I don't know if it would be enjoyable if someone hadn't read the books first. Dune is one of my favorite sci-fi books of all time, so I'm biased.

4. I was really surprised it ended where it ended. The story felt like it had just finished the first act & was about to start getting good. I was really hoping the ending was an intermission or something.

5. None of the bad guys really...did anything bad. I mean, they fire-bombed their dune-home, but you know what I mean. Like, you have to demonstrate why the Baron is a Bad Dude™.

6. I feel like this should have been a character-focused, character-driven movie, specifically on Paul. But it was really focused on the bigness & the beauty of the movie. Like, explaining & emphasizing the concept of the Kwisatz Haderach should have been a central focus right from the very beginning. There's a heavy emphasis on the political stuff in the book, but I feel like the movie should have been a bit closer to something like the first Bourne movie, where you buy into Jason Bourne right away & then are off on an adventure with him for the rest of the movie.

7. I had a hard time buying into Zendaya, because of Disney & Spiderman. I also feel like Paul Atreides would be someone more like a young Paul Walker. I feel like Liam Neeson would have fit really well into this world as well, either as Paul's father or as a Fremen.

8. I would have liked to have seen it as a TV series, with the complexity of the first two seasons of Lost, so that they could REALLY go into depth with the movie. And also shown off the character of the people to develop them, like how House Atreides provides water to the people after dinner.

9. After that really fun shield knife-fight in the beginning for training, I wish the desert crysknife fight had been more awesome.

Very pretty movie. Wish it had captured the story more!

The ending is indeed an intermission. Dune part 2 will start production soon to complete the story of the first book.

I re watched dune last night. I think it was better than when I watched it in IMAX. I still feel all the cut scenes would have helped a lot but it was good.

Villeneuve decided a lot of the Baron's more sadistic tendencies were problematic and I think I agree with him. Also we didn't get a lot of time with the character in the first part either so certainly an opportunity to amp up the menace some in part 2.

I was onboard until you said the movie needed Paul Walker and Liam Neeson :rage:

I think there are ways to allude to the insanity & show more of his cruelty without getting gross. Like, did they a good job in LOTR with the fight scenes without getting super gory.

I felt like the Dune book was very personal (following Paul) & the movie was sort of like a documentary of events.

I still think the problem is that you can't take the kind of expository internal dialogue that Dune is full of and translate that into movie scenes. It's a fundamental problem that writers face when adapting novels to screenplays. A movie that was faithful to the book would be full of narration and apparently nobody wants that.
